The summer of 2018 blessed us with many jams, but as the days get a little bit shorter, the time’s come to declare one track champion.

Spotify released its official “Songs of the Summer” list based on number of streams, and it’s filled with tracks that you’ve definitely had stuck in your head over the past three sweltering months.

1. “In My Feelings” – Drake

Drake’s “In My Feelings” takes the number one spot on Spotify’s global and U.S. lists, but what else did you expect from the 6 god? “Kiki, do you love me?” was the question on everyone’s minds after the #InMyFeelings challenge took off — and the video, featuring Phylicia Rashad and Lala Anthony, is a fun one, too. Between June 1 and August 20, Drake’s song was streamed 393 million times. Read more…

Spotify may be building a smart speaker to compete with the Amazon Echo

TwitterFacebook

The smart speaker race has intensified since Apple threw its hat in the ring with HomePod, but a new competitor may be entering the fray — and it could be a game-changer.

Based on a series of job postings, it appears Spotify is making its own smart speaker.

“Spotify is on its way to creating its first physical products and setting up an operational organization for manufacturing, supply chain, sales & marketing,” reads a job description for an Operations Manager: Hardware Product on Spotify’s recruitment page. Spotify posted the job on Tuesday, according to The Guardian.

Spotify’s massive $1.6 billion lawsuit reveals how it must adapt if it wants to survive

TwitterFacebook

Spotify’s rapid ascendance has a price: A $1.6 billion lawsuit for failing to pay some artists for their songs.

The music publisher Wixen, which represents artists like Neil Young, the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, and Tom Petty, has sued Spotify to the tune of $150,000 per song. Wixen says Spotify failed to get the necessary licenses to play over ten thousand songs.

The lawsuit underscores that while Spotify has grown quickly, it still faces issues with how it compensates artists and songwriters due to complex questions around music rights. Spotify will need to adapt to address that issue ahead of its debut as a public company — and as it looks to turn a profit for the first time. Read more…

Spotify’s most streamed artists are all men. The music industry needs to do better.

TwitterFacebook

Every holiday season, Spotify drops personal year-end playlists, and reveals the most streamed artists and songs of the year — which this year included no women, as individuals or performing in groups.

Seriously. No women. That says something disturbing about gender inequality in the music industry.

Ed Sheeran, Drake, The Weeknd, Kendrick Lamar, and The Chainsmokers took the top spots for most streamed artists. The most streamed groups were Coldplay (thanks to their collaboration with The Chainsmokers), Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, Linkin Park (most likely due to the death of frontman Chester Bennington), and Migos.  Read more…
