‘Santa Clarita Diet’ and ‘What We Do In The Shadows’ turn the undead into comedy gold

TwitterFacebook

There’s nothing funnier than being undead. At least that’s what Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet and FX’s What We Do In The Shadows want us to believe. Both draw from the folklore of the monsters at their core while amplifying their narratives with humor.

The form of comedy is different for both but they confirm the idea that TV is branching away from the usually grim portrayal of the subject matter. Besides indulging fans of the genre, they have the ability to pull in a wider audience — one that doesn’t care for gore or violence but still gets to participate in the fantasy of it — by adding comedy to the mix. Netflix’s ‘Delhi Crime’ is a tenacious, disquieting true crime drama

TwitterFacebook

True crime dramas are frequently engaging but don’t necessarily make for the easiest viewing experience. Shock, grief, and anger usually get involved as you watch the story unravel.

All of these feelings are escalated in Netflix’s Delhi Crime. The seven-episode first season (which is mostly in English, with subtitled scenes in Hindi) is based on a real-life incident that took place in 2012 in India’s capital of New Delhi – the horrific gang-rape of a physiotherapy intern on a moving city bus.

With Delhi Crime, it’s the shock at the heinousness of the crime that comes first. The starting point of the series is the discovery of the naked, injured bodies of Deepika and Akash (names changed for the show). Akash, who has sustained bruises but is stable, tells the officers they were robbed and beaten in a bus by several men, including the driver. They proceeded to sexually and violently assault Deepika, who is now hanging on for her life. Read more…

Netflix cancels ‘One Day at a Time’ amidst vocal #RenewODAAT campaign

TwitterFacebook

Netflix has made the no good, very bad decision to cancel One Day at a Time.

In a relatively long Twitter thread, the streaming giant announced the “tough choice” to stop making more of this inclusive, empathetic, hilarious comedy centering on the Alvarezes, a Cuban-American immigrant family led by Rita Moreno and Justina Machado.

We’ve made the very difficult decision not to renew One Day At A Time for a fourth season. The choice did not come easily — we spent several weeks trying to find a way to make another season work but in the end simply not enough people watched to justify another season.
