The Atlantic Ocean is packed with storms. What’s going on?

TwitterFacebook

The Atlantic Ocean is alive.

Including Hurricane Florence, there are currently four named storms — tempests with winds of at least 39 mph — churning in the Atlantic. This ties the record for the most named storms in the Atlantic at any one time.

And there could be more: There’s yet another collection of thunderstorms off in the Gulf of Mexico that has a decent, 50 percent shot, of becoming the fifth well-developed, named storm.

While there’s substantial evidence that climate change is having a major impact on the behavior of hurricanes, this current flurry of storms falls within the realm of expected activity for this time of year.  Read more…

How Hurricane Florence overcame big odds to target the East Coast

TwitterFacebook

Hurricane Florence has done something strange.

The Category 4 storm — which is expected to make landfall somewhere in the Southeastern U.S. on early Friday morning as a major hurricane — has broken with a 170-year long history of Atlantic hurricanes to now target the United States.

Since 1851, there have been 33 named-storms that churned within 100 miles of Florence’s position in the middle of the AtlanticNone of them, according to a tweet from hurricane scientist Phil Klotzbach, ever made landfall in the U.S.

Watch the launch of ESA’s Aeolus mission to map Earth’s winds with lasers

An ESA mission 20 years in the making is set to take off today, launching the first satellite to monitor the planet’s winds directly — and using a giant laser, at that. Aeolus takes off from French Guiana at nearly midnight there, about 2:20 PM Pacific time, and you can watch the launch live here.

Striking photos show the ‘apocalyptic’ blaze engulfing UK moorland

Wildfires of “apocalyptic” proportions have engulfed Saddleworth Moor, near Manchester, northern England, for several days this week.

The blaze began on Sunday 24 June during a heatwave which saw temperatures across the UK rise to record highs.

The fires — which set seven square miles of grassland ablaze — have resulted in the greater Manchester region being blanketed in a canopy of thick smoke.

2018’s hurricane season will be active, but probably not as bad as last year

TwitterFacebook

On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released its forecast for the looming 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, and it’ll be an active one.

Forecasters say that there’s a 70 percent chance that the season will be active with hurricanes, but it’s unlikely that we’ll see the extremes of 2017, when six major storms (which have sustained destructive winds of at least 111 mph) roared through the Atlantic.

“Last year was extremely active,” Gerry Bell, the lead hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, said in an interview. “It was one of the strongest seasons on record.” Read more…
