The magic of Book Fairies

One August night while listening to the Hamilton soundtrack on his commute home from work, Jack Dowd, a writer in London, noticed something curious out of the corner of his eye: an abandoned book.

The Subtle Knife, a young adult fantasy novel written by Philip Pullman, was wrapped in ribbon and propped against a wrought-iron fence. It was a magical discovery Dowd would later learn was the intentional work of the Book Fairies.

The Book Fairies community is a group of more than 9,000 passionate book lovers who hide books around the world for unsuspecting people to find. It was launched in March 2017 by Cordelia Oxley, a bibliophile who fell in love with the selfless act of book sharing after joining the small London-based initiative Books on the Underground in 2012.
