Time’s Up UK fund pays out £1M to combat sexual assault and harassment

TwitterFacebook

When the Justice and Equality Fund was set up earlier this year, it was kicked off with a £1million ($1,3 million) donation from Emma Watson and signed off on by more than 200 British women in the entertainment industry.

The foundation — the UK counterpart of the Time’s Up Legal Defence Fund in the U.S. — is working to end systemic harassment and abuse. Now the organisation has made its first major donation to British women’s organisations supporting survivors of sexual abuse and harassment.

The fund just awarded over £1M in grants to 7 women’s organisations in the UK. The biggest donations — around £200,000 ($264,000) — were made to two separate legal support services for women in the UK and a rape crisis service in Northern Ireland. The country has been without rape crisis support services in 12 years due to funding cuts. Read more…

Emma Watson pens moving open letter to Savita Halappanavar, who died after being denied an abortion

TwitterFacebook

On Oct. 28, 2012, Savita Halappanavar died in University Hospital Galway, Ireland, due to complications of a septic miscarriage after being denied an abortion.

Her death — which an inquest ruled was caused by “medical misadventure” — was the catalyst for Ireland’s historic abortion referendum.

Six years on from Savita’s preventable death, Emma Watson has penned a moving open letter to the 31-year-old woman.

It was a great honour to be asked by @PORTERmagazine to pay the deepest respect to the legacy of Dr Savita Halappanavar, whose death powered the determination of activists to change Irish abortion laws & fight for reproductive justice all over the worldhttps://t.co/KZWRpp7btO pic.twitter.com/yLDXgcHKyh

Emma Watson sends moving message to people voting in Ireland’s abortion referendum

TwitterFacebook

Emma Watson has tweeted an inspiring message to people voting in Ireland’s historic abortion referendum.

On May 25, Irish people cast their votes to decide whether the country’s 8th amendment—which currently makes abortion illegal in almost all circumstances—should be repealed.

“A vote for the freedom to choose, a vote for women’s rights, a vote for women’s control over their bodies, a vote for women’s health and safety, a vote towards equality,” wrote Watson on Twitter.

Emma Watson and Robert Pattinson reunite at Golden Globes, ‘Harry Potter’ fans go wild

TwitterFacebook

If there’s one thing the internet loves almost as much as shutdowns and awkward moments, it’s reunions.

Enter Emma Watson and Robert Pattinson, finally together again a full 13 years after Cedric Diggory was cruelly snatched from us in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

On Sunday, the pair presented the award for Best Limited Series or TV Movie to Big Little Lies at the Golden Globes — and the Harry Potter fandom understandably exploded.
