Walmart’s partnership with Waymo is a backhanded swipe at Amazon
Waymo has a new partnership with Walmart that may just look like a deal to put more self-driving cars on the road. But in the words of Jafar from Aladin, things are not always what they seem.
Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet, has struck an agreement with Walmart and four other national retailers for a test program in the Phoenix, AZ area, according to CNBC.
Other retailers include the car rental company Avis, car repair company AutoNation, the Element Hotel, and a national shopping center real estate company called DDR Corp. It will offer customers who patronize those businesses rides to and from in its autonomous vehicles. And since all of these chains are national, these partnerships have the potential to expand beyond Phoenix. Read more…

Amazon is hiring — and while that news isn’t particularly unusual, some very detailed job listings from the company may have given away the online retail giant’s future plans.
The company posted four job listings last month suggesting that the cashier-less Amazon Go store that opened in Seattle this year may soon be joined by similar stores in San Francisco and Chicago.

The job listings are for a store manager and assistant store manager in both cities.
The identical listings for both cities show that Amazon is looking for fairly experienced retail employees. “Come join Amazon Go and help our customers get good food, fast!” the listing reads. All other Amazon Go related job posts are out of the original Seattle location. Read more…

Inside Amazon’s surveillance-powered no-checkout convenience store
By now many have heard of Amazon’s most audacious attempt to shake up the retail world, the cashless, cashierless Go store. Walk in, grab what you want, and walk out. I got a chance to do just that recently, as well as pick the brain of one of its chief architects. My intention going in was to try to shoplift something and catch these complacent Amazon types napping. But it became clear… Read More
