A skeleton’s blue teeth represent a ‘bombshell’ discovery for women’s history

TwitterFacebook

It’s not surprising to learn that women who lived during the Middle Ages didn’t always get the credit they deserved, but tangible proof that further erodes our male-centric view of history is always welcome.

A new study asserts that lapis lazuli found in the teeth from the remains of a Medieval woman indicates that she was an artist. Researchers are calling the discovery a “bombshell” because it provides extremely uncommon proof of the role that women played as skilled artists at the time.

“It’s kind of a bombshell for my field,” Alison Beach, a medieval history professor at Ohio State University and co-author of the study, told the Associated Press. “It’s so rare to find material evidence of women’s artistic and literary work in the Middle Ages.” Read more…

Town erects plastic covering over Banksy’s latest mural

TwitterFacebook

File this one under deeply ironic — yet sadly necessary.

On Wednesday, the elusive street artist Banksy claimed responsibility on Instagram for a new mural that appeared on the wall of a garage in the south Wales town of Port Talbot.

Then, days after the work appeared, the town erected a transparent plastic sheet wall to protect the latest work from the artist who made a name for himself by vandalizing public property.

The irony is difficult to ignore, but the town’s actions are wholly understandable.

Google is making those works accessible on your phone with its Arts and Culture app, where you can use augmented reality to visit a virtual art gallery full of Vermeer’s works.

The pocket gallery is accessible in the Meet Vermeer section of the app, which compiles all of the painter’s works in one multi-room exhibition, in what’s been described as “the first ever international online retrospective” of Vermeer. Read more…
