Trump’s HHS removes all mention of lesbian and bisexual women’s health from their website

Congratulations, everyone! Lesbian and bisexual health problems are officially over.

Or so it would seem, if you believe the Department of Health and Human Services’ website. According to the Sunlight Foundation, a government transparency project, HHS removed pages from it’s Office on Women’s Health site that focused on lesbian and bisexual women’s health.

HHS told Politico, who first reported the story, that the pages were taken down because of a “routine update.” However, they appear to have been gone since September — and none of the missing information has been restored to the site. Read more…

Twitter apologises for ‘#bisexual’ search error

Twitter has finally come back with an apology and an explanation for the “bisexual” search mistake.

Some users had noticed the platform’s search tool had banned photos, videos, and news results for terms like “#bisexual.”

Twitter said it had identified the error and were working to resolve the issue.

Now, the company explains what went wrong. “We apologize for anyone negatively impacted by this bug. It is not consistent with our values as a company,” it said on its support account.

In order to identify sensitive content, Twitter has a list of terms that frequently appear besides adult content. But many of the terms on the list “are not inherently explicit” so the company uses other signals to establish whether the content is sensitive. Read more…

Twitter’s search tool is blocking photo searches of #bisexual, but not #lesbian or #gay

Twitter has a lot of explaining to do.

The social media platform is under scrutiny after several accounts noticed the search tool had begun to bar photos (as well as videos and news) tagged with the #bisexual hashtag — and others.

The hashtags #bisexual and #bisexuality are not the only ones to be filtered out by Twitter’s search tools. Included in the block are words like “butt,” “boobs,” and various sexual slurs, but as historian and CUNY professor Angus Johnston (@studentactivism on Twitter) pointed out in a series of tweets, there are inconsistencies with what has been blocked and what hasn’t.
