Boeing’s hypersonic concept jet could fly from NYC to London in 2 hours. Eventually, that is.

TwitterFacebook

A passenger jet flying at hypersonic speeds could revolutionize air travel by cutting down a transatlantic flight from New York to London from seven hours to two.

Er, theoretically, that is.

Boeing is still trying to figure out how any of this will all actually happen, but the aircraft manufacturing company does have its eye on a launch date. If the company has its way, it’ll get these hypersonic jets in the air in about 20 to 30 years from now — which, coincidentally, is about as long as every layover in Chicago O’Hare feels.

Boeing’s fast-flying plane “debuted” at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Atlanta on Wednesday. It’s the latest development of a vision that the company’s CEO Dennis Muilenburg first shared with the world back in February. Read more…

Boeing’s passenger drone competition winners imagine wild new flying car designs

TwitterFacebook

The next major development in aerospace design isn’t focused on airplanes, but rather personal flying vehicles — yes flying cars. These designs typically go far beyond usual sci-fi sketches and flesh out concepts that could one day be flying overhead. Maybe. Eventually. Probably.

The Boeing-sponsored design competition GoFly recently selected 10 winners out of hundreds of submissions for the best designs to carry a person 20 miles without refueling or recharging and with a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability. That means the vehicles don’t need a runway or a lot of space to get airborne. Read more…

Watch Boeing refuel a huge military tanker mid-flight

Boeing successfully refueled a KC-46 Pegasus tanker from a fellow tanker — mid-air.

Boeing transferred 146,000 pounds of fuel from one plane to another after taking off from Boeing Field, near Seattle.

Here’s a video of the mid-air fuel transfer. The fuel was off-loaded at a rate of 1,200 gallons per minute.

TwitterFacebook

Flying to the UK from Australia has always been an exceptionally long trip.

Australian airline Qantas has made that trek less arduous with the debut of its non-stop Perth to London flight on Saturday — its travel time has been shaved down to a somewhat brisk 17 hours.

It’s the first time Europe and Australia have been connected with a direct commercial flight.

Previously, flights stopped in Singapore or Dubai before continuing on. Qantas said it is able to reduce the time of the 9,000 mile (14,498km) flight by eliminating stopovers and picking paths based on the best winds for efficiency and speed. Read more…
