How blockchain will change the future of the freelancer industry

TwitterFacebook

In recent years, the way work gets done has begun to shift. Our future world is being built by an army of independent consultants and freelancers who allow businesses and employees to enjoy more freedom. Freelancers now make up more than 35% of the American workforce and are responsible for a significant amount of the U.S. GDP.

Blockchain is a unique technology, capable of decentralizing networks and allowing people to connect. This decentralization is likely to spur a wave of disruption through its ability to create distributed digital ledgers that act as transparent and living “records of transactions.” Read more…

Just to let you know, if you buy something featured here, Mashable might earn an affiliate commission.

Once upon a time — the year 2003, to be exact — the discontinuation of the blogging software b2/cafelog forced two web developers to create a new platform for all their site-building needs. Fast forward a good 14 years or so, and their little project — WordPress — has become the most popular CMS in the world, powering nearly 29% (and counting) of the interwebs.

You’ll run into a lot of questions in the beginning stages of building a blog for a business, but “Which platform should I use?” shouldn’t be one of them. As millions of people across the globe could tell you, WordPress is the easiest, most affordable option out there, hands down, whether you want a lucrative online destination for your shop or just a virtual place to promote your comic about an Angry Pear. (That’s a real thing, by the way.) Read more…

Hey Google, stop using Twitter in search results to spread fake news

TwitterFacebook

Google: Do better.

That was among the big takeaways on Sunday afternoon as people scrambled to learn more about the shooter who killed 26 people that day at a church in Texas. Instead of being given legitimate insight and hard news, Google served people a litany of false information and propaganda—the kind meant to inflame people’s emotions, and drive them apart. Call it whatever you want, so long as you don’t call it news.

And that is, let’s be real, what Google gave to everyone. Front and center.

The results featured a now-typical lineup of chum for the far right: Islam, Antifa, Hillary Clinton, et al.  Read more…

Juli Briskman did what a lot of folks have undoubtedly imagined themselves doing.

She was biking in Sterling, Virginia, on Oct. 28, as President Donald Trump’s motorcade whisked past her, driving away from one of his golf courses. As the black SUVs rolled by, she raised her left arm and extended her middle finger.

The photo went everywhere so fast that, according to HuffPost, she decided to tell the human resources department at Akima LLC, where she worked as a marketing specialist.

Her employer wasn’t too happy about the photo, and they fired her.  Read more…

Co-working space provider WeWork is looking towards a new generation of entrepreneurs—many of whom probably don’t know what that word means.

The $20 billion startup said Monday that it’s launching a private elementary school inside one its trendy New York office spaces with a pilot class of seven, including a child of founders Adam and Rebekah Neumann, Bloomberg reported.

“In my book, there’s no reason why children in elementary schools can’t be launching their own businesses,” Rebekah Neumann told the news site in an interview. Read more…

Why AI provides a fresh opportunity to neutralize bias

TwitterFacebook

Humans develop biases over time. We aren’t born with them. However, examples of gender, economic, occupational and racial bias exist in communities, industries and social contexts around the world. And while there are people leading initiatives to fundamentally change these phenomena in the physical world, it persists and manifests in new ways in the digital world.

In the tech world, bias permeates everything from startup culture to investment pitches during funding rounds to the technology itself. Innovations with world-changing potential don’t get necessary funding, or are completely overlooked, because of the demographic makeup or gender of their founders. People with non-traditional and extracurricular experiences that qualify them for coding jobs are being screened out of the recruitment process due to their varied backgrounds. Read more…
