A U.S. court has granted Microsoft the authority to seize domain names in order to take down a phishing campaign run by a notorious group of Iranian hackers.

In a post on Microsoft’s official blog, Customer Security & Trust VP Tom Burt shared details from the now unsealed case it filed in the U.S. District Court for Washington D.C against the hacker group called Phosphorus. The group is also known under the names APT 35, Charming Kitten, and Ajax Security Team.

Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit was allowed to take control of 99 domains in order to stop the hackers’ attacks. Domains such as outlook-verify.net, yahoo-verify.net, and verification-live.com were being used in spear-phishing campaigns by the Iranian hackers. Read more…

Fake news sites are simply changing their domain name to get around Facebook fact-checkers

TwitterFacebook

Facebook has been cracking down on the fake news that gets shared on its platform. One problem: one of the biggest fake news websites has found a workaround.

In order to avoid Facebook’s fact checking system, the site formerly known as YourNewsWire, one of the most well-known purveyors of fake news online, has simply rebranded. The site now goes by News Punch and posts fake news content similar to what it published under their former name, according to a report by Poynter

YourNewsWire co-founders Sinclair Treadway and Sean Adl-Tabatabai, who reside in California, founded the site in 2014. The two completely migrated the website from the “yournewswire.com” domain name to “newspunch.com” in November 2018. Treadway told Bloomberg at the time that they move was made due to declining revenue thanks to Facebook’s fact-checking system. Under this program, fact-checking outlets like Snopes are able to mark content posted on Facebook as false, which in turn decreases the site’s reach on Facebook. Read more…

Incels.me, a major hub for hate speech and misogyny, suspended by .ME registry

TwitterFacebook

Incels.me, the toxic misogynistic community of self-proclaimed involuntary celibates, is no more — at least at that web address.

On Tuesday, the .ME registry, which controls the entire .ME domain database, published a post explaining that they — and not a domain registrar like GoDaddy — had suspended the domain. The registry says the domain was suspended over anti-abuse policy infractions based on the promotion of acts of violence and hate speech on the website. Incels.me has been inaccessible since Oct. 15.

Incels.me acted as the main online hub for involuntary celibates, or “incels” for short, who congregated in its forums. The incel community is known for its toxic misogynistic views, identifying themselves as “single without choosing to be so,” and blaming women as well as men in relationships for their own sexual failures.
