The pace at which the scientific breakthroughs working to bend the machinery of life to the whims of manufacturing have transformed into real businesses has intensified competition in the biomanufacturing market. That’s just one reason why Synvitrobio is rebranding as it takes on $2.6 million in new financing to pursue opportunities in biopharmaceutical and biochemical manufacturing. […]

Electric cars in India to get a boost with new clean energy policy
An all-electric rickshaw or three-wheeled vehicle may soon be more of the norm on streets in India — a country with a massive 1.3 billion population and a dependency on carbon energy sources to match.
At this week’s Global Mobility Summit in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made comments that could change the car industry and energy consumption in the country. He spoke about a countrywide policy to support more electric and non-oil-dependent vehicles and indicated it will launch soon, according to Reuters.
Car companies are chomping at the bit to tap into the Indian market. Toyota is already working to bring electric vehicles to India in the next few years and more recently Suzuki announced 50 electric prototypes to test in the country. If the country commits to electric incentive and credit programs to move drivers away from fossil fuels, it could attract an electric vehicle market like China’s. Read more…

The inside of data centers is loud and hot — and keeping servers from overheating is a major factor in the cost of running them. It’s no surprise then that the big players in this space, including Facebook, Microsoft and Google, all look for different ways of saving cooling costs. Facebook uses cool outside air when […]

Auxetics are materials that store energy internally rather than bulging out. In this way they can store more energy when squeezed or struck and disperse it more regularly. Historically, however, these materials have had sharp corners that could break easily with enough pressure. Now researchers at Queen Mary University of London and University of Cambridge […]

Tesla’s production problems apparently don’t stop with the Model 3. According to a Reuters report, production of the company’s solar tiles have been delayed by assembly line problems.
Part of the issue is producing tiles that meet the aesthetic standards of company CEO, Elon Musk.
Announced in October 2016, Tesla’s Solar Roof tiles are advertised as a beautiful, durable alternative to regular roof tiles that also happen to produce electricity to power your home. But the production at Tesla’s Buffalo, New York plant that opened last year has been so slow that it forced Panasonic — Tesla’s partner in this venture — to sell components it built for Tesla to other buyers. This is according to unnamed current and former Panasonic employees as well as a former Tesla employee. Read more…

Daguerreotypes – photos made with a process that used mercury vapors on an iodine-sensitized silvered plate – break down quite easily. The result is a fogged plate that that, more often that not, is completely ruined by time and mistreatment. However researchers at Western University have created a system that uses synchrotrons and “rapid-scanning micro-X-ray […]

Bitcoin is the way of the future — as long as that future just so happens to include shocking levels of energy consumption increasing at a jaw dropping rate.
So claims a new study published yesterday in Joule which, unfortunately for all the hodlers out there, paints a pretty dire picture. Specifically, one painted in ash. It says that by the end of this year Bitcoin electricity use could triple, approaching the consumption rates of the entire country of Austria.
