Russian government hackers mined bitcoin to fund attacks on FIFA, anti-doping agencies

TwitterFacebook

People are definitely spending bitcoin, just maybe not the kind of people proponents of cryptocurrency adoption had in mind.

A lengthy indictment from the Justice Department dropped today, accusing seven Russian intelligence officers of conspiring to hack anti-doping agencies around the world in retaliation for their efforts to expose Russian athletic doping. And, at least according to the US officials, the GRU hacking group mined bitcoin to fund its efforts.

“The pool of bitcoin generated from the GRU’s mining activity was used, for example, to pay a United States-based company to register the [phishing] domain wada-arna.org through a payment processing company located in the United States,” reads the indictment. “The conspirators used the same funding structure—and in some cases, the very same pool of funds—to purchase key accounts, servers, and domains used in their anti-doping related hacking activity.” Read more…

Russian hackers are upping the ante of their cyberattacks.

The next level of cyber warfare may not be here thanks to the latest weapon being utilized by Russian hackers.

Researchers with the cybersecurity company ESET have discovered what is believed to be the first known UEFI rootkit malware used in a cyber attack. In a blog post, ESET explains:

If the name “Fancy Bear” sounds familiar, it’s because they’re the hacking group embedded in Russia’s GRU intelligence agency that has been found responsible for the 2016 DNC emails hack and various misinformation campaigns surrounding the US elections. Earlier this summer, special counsel Robert Mueller indicted a number of Russian nationals with the Fancy Bear hacking group for their role in these attacks. Read more…

Russian hackers — they’re everywhere. Not even those in the the pope’s camp are safe from them, according to a new report. And yes: That pope.

While the narrative surrounding Russian hacking efforts has centered mostly around the 2016 U.S. election, a new report published by cybersecurity firm Secureworks and obtained by the Associated Press shows hackers also targeted figures like John Kerry, Colin Powell, a member of the Russian punk rock band Pussy Riot, and — gasp! — a representative of the Pope Francis, based in Kiev.

According to the AP, the list shows hackers, aligned with the Russian government, who attempted to bust into around 4,700 Gmail accounts (leaving one to wonder why a representative for the pope even uses Gmail).  Read more…
