Incredible treatment heals a young boy’s lethal skin disease with stem cells

The complications of the little boy’s genetic skin disease grew as he did. Tiny blisters had covered his back as a newborn. Then came the chronic skin wounds that extended from his buttocks down to his legs.

By June 2015, at age 7, the boy had lost nearly two-thirds of his skin due to an infection related to the genetic disorder junctional epidermolysis bullosa, which causes the skin to become extremely fragile. There’s no cure for the disease, and it is often fatal for kids. At the burn unit at Children’s Hospital in Bochum, Germany, doctors offered him constant morphine and bandaged much of his body, but nothing — not even his father’s offer to donate his skin — worked to heal his wounds. She started yoga after getting a deal on a class and, as she says, “the rest was history!”

While yoga has helped Yeo manage her stress, it has also helped her manage her struggle with astigmatism—an imperfection in the curvature of your eye that causes objects to appear blurry or distorted. Having a vagina doesn’t feel like it comes with great perks these days, but there are still a few benefits available to those of us who have them, believe it or not.

Thankfully there’s a new website to help us navigate what exactly theses benefits are. The helpfully named VaginaBenefits.com is put together by TIA, an app that provides women’s health advice, and is meant to help people who are trying to navigate our current insurance landscape.

So what exactly are these benefits? They’re women’s health services that the Affordable Care Act mandated be 100 percent covered by insurance. They include birth control without a copay, UTI and STI tests, pap smears, breast cancer screenings, and wellness exams.  Read more…
