Say goodbye to those annoying internet lag times, South Africa.
Microsoft has officially become the first major cloud service provider to open data centers in Africa. The company announced on Wednesday that two of its Azure cloud data centers have gone live in Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa.
“The launch of these regions marks a major milestone for Microsoft as we open our first enterprise-grade datacenters in Africa, becoming the first global provider to deliver cloud services from datacenters on the continent,” wrote Microsoft Azure VP Tom Keane in the statement.
The Redmond, Washington based company beat out fellow tech giants, like Amazon, which are also racing to open cloud data centers on the continent. The ecommerge giant previously announced it would have its AWS data centers running in South Africa by 2020. Read more…

Huawei is taking its fight against the U.S. to the courts.
The Chinese tech giant announced on Thursday it would be filing a lawsuit against the U.S. government, which has accused Huawei of being a spy threat and placed restrictions on its products.
Huawei rotating chairman Guo Ping said the company wants to challenge the constitutionality of the National Defense Authorization Act, which saw Huawei’s products banned in the U.S., and also to seek an injunction against those restrictions.
Guo said the U.S. government has failed to provide evidence on it being a security threat, and has convinced other countries to not use its products. Read more…

Massive-scale predictive analytics is a relatively new phenomenon, one that challenges both decades of law as well as consumer thinking about privacy. As a technology, it may well save thousands of lives in applications like predictive medicine, but if it isn’t used carefully, it may prevent thousands from getting loans, for instance, if an underwriting […]

Huawei should soon be a brand just as well known as Apple.
The Chinese company has recently come out with the best folding phone the market has seen so far — but today, we’re here to talk laptops. The Huawei Matebook X Pro outdoes the MacBook (and every laptop ever, really) on nearly every front, and it’s $200 off at Amazon today.
At just $1,299.99, this is cheaper than Microsoft’s sale price and is nearly its lowest price on Amazon ever — it’s only ever been 99 cents cheaper.
Where to start? The Matebook X Pro hits everything you’d want in a laptop both capability-wise and looks-wise. With possibly the thinnest bezels on a laptop ever, a 91% screen-to-body ratio, 3K touchscreen with the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics, and Dolby Atmos audio, it’s essentially a movie theatre on the go. An Intel Core i7 processor and a 12-hour battery life ensure speed and reliability for those long days of non-stop work (slash gaming). But our description barely does it justice — it’s just something you need to experience IRL. Read more…
