8K TVs are here, and they’re totally pointless

TwitterFacebook

Every now and then, TV manufacturers start a new trend to keep the hype for their products going. If you bought a TV in the last year, a salesman probably told you that some iteration of HDR is a must-have. Your current TV likely supports 3D — and I bet you haven’t used that feature in ages.

The hot new thing at this year’s IFA, Berlin’s trade show which gathers the largest consumer electronics manufacturers, was 8K TVs. I’ve seen those TVs, and I can tell you, they all had an absolutely stunning picture.

I can also tell you that you absolutely don’t need one.

Bang and Olufsen’s new speaker is a wheel that you can hang on a wall

TwitterFacebook

You got to hand it to Bang & Olufsen: Their gadgets are different from anything else out there.

On Thursday, at a press event ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin, the company showed the Beosound Edge — a circular, wireless speaker that doesn’t conform to most people’s idea of how speakers should look.

Designed in collaboration with designer Michael Anastassiades and inspired by a coin standing on its side, the Edge looks like a polished aluminum wheel with a matte black fabric cover hiding its guts. You can place it on the floor or hang it onto a special wall mount.  Read more…

Samsung’s massive 8K QLED TV will hit stores in October

TwitterFacebook

You’ve heard about 8K televisions for years, but even if you had a desire to buy one — given that 8K content is incredibly hard to find — you probably weren’t actually able to do so as sales haven’t yet started for most 8K models.

Now, however, Samsung has an 8K TV that isn’t just for show. The 85-inch Q900FN, announced ahead of the IFA trade show in Berlin, has four times the pixels than your typical puny 4K TV, and it’ll arrive to U.S. stores this October.

The QLED TV — not to be confused with OLED — offers 4,000 nit peak brightness and supports the new HDR10+ standard, which optimizes brightness levels so that content doesn’t appear darker than originally intended.  Read more…

Polaroid’s OneStep+ makes instant photography even more fun with app connectivity

TwitterFacebook

As charming and fun as taking instant photos with an analog camera is, the world is digital now, and if you can’t post your shots to Instagram, they might as well not exist.

That’s why Polaroid Originals (formerly Impossible) has returned with the OneStep+, a new instant camera that mashes last year’s OneStep 2 with Bluetooth and app connectivity.

At $159.99, the new OneStep+ is a little pricier than the $99.99 OneStep 2, but it does come with a bunch of new improvements that are well worth the extra charge. Read more…
