‘Captain Marvel’ throws back to the ’90s with optical illusion posters designed to make you hate yourself

TwitterFacebook

The Captain Marvel marketing team is back on the nostalgia hype train with the release of five “Magic Eye” posters.

These 3D optical illusions were first made popular through the Magic Eye book series known to pretty much any ’90s kid with a library card, and now continue to haunt those of us who could never see their hidden secrets in the first place.

The pictures’ colorful, abstract patterns are supposed to reveal hidden images when stared at long enough, but personally they make me feel like Star-Lord at the end of Infinity War – that is to say, a disappointment to every living being on this planet including and especially myself. Read more…

From unzipped office buildings to melting houses, this artist’s architectural illusions are mind-bending

TwitterFacebook

Artist Alex Chinneck is well-known for his mind-bending architectural illusions. This time, he unzipped a soon-to-be-demolished office building in Ashford, Kent, UK. People hear two different words when they play this clip and it’s tearing the internet apart

TwitterFacebook

We regret to inform you that an audio version of The Dress has arrived on our shores.

On Sunday, Redditor RolandCamry shared an audio clip of a male voice saying…something. Honestly, we can’t tell you for sure, because some people hear “yanny” and some people hear “laurel.”

It is, of course, a whole thing.

The clip has since spread to Twitter, where it’s perplexing people left and right. Some people swear all they hear is “yanny.” Others believe, in their heart of hearts, that the voice is saying “laurel.” And some people — the most infuriated, we are sure — go back and forth between the two. Can we be sure of nothing in this cold, dark world? Read more…

Identifying a lower-case ‘g’ is far harder than you might think

TwitterFacebook

So you think you know the alphabet, eh. Well, think again.

Cognitive scientists at John Hopkins University noticed that people find it very difficult to identify a lowercase “g”, despite seeing it every day.

Michael McCloskey, the senior author of the study, said that we often think that if we just look at something enough, we know its shape, but their results suggest that isn’t the case.

“What we think may be happening here is that we learn the shapes of most letters in part because we have to write them in school. Looptail g is something we’re never taught to write, so we may not learn its shape as well,” he said. Read more…

This fast food cup illusion is really confusing the internet

TwitterFacebook

There’s only one thing Twitter loves more than a rage-fuelled political debate, and that’s a good mystery.

On Sunday, Twitter user @franco_713 shared a video of himself pouring soda between three different-sized Jack’s fast food cups.

“They rlly be finessing our ass lmaoo,” he wrote alongside the clip.

The obvious implication is that we’re getting the same amount of liquid no matter what size cup is purchased. But is everything as it seems?

Unsurprisingly, the people of Twitter were skeptical.

How do we know there wasn’t already soda in there that we couldn’t see ? 🤔
