Apple puts third-party screen time apps on notice

A number of app developers building third-party screen time trackers and parental control applications are worried that Apple’s increased scrutiny of their apps in recent weeks is not a coincidence. With Apple’s launch of iOS 12, the company has implemented its own built-in screen time tracking tools and controls. Not long after, developers’ third-party screen […]

Here’s how to better support people who are suicidal

TwitterFacebook

I remember whispers, silence, and shame. When I was growing up in the 1960s and 70s, an older cousin violently ended his life. It was never openly discussed, leaving questions and grief surrounding his death to reverberate for years.

Decades later, suicide continues to create quiet circles of despair, a circle that grows ever wider in this country: The latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention numbers show a 25.4 percent jump in the national suicide rate from 1999 to 2016, when nearly 45,000 people ages 10 or older completed suicide. For every life lost, there are even more stories – from family, friends, and colleagues – that must be heard to eradicate the deep-seated stigma and the silence that contribute to this crisis. What kids need to be taught about mental health in schools

TwitterFacebook

Welcome to Small Humans, an ongoing series at Mashable that looks at how to take care of – and deal with – the kids in your life. Because Dr. Spock is nice and all, but it’s 2018 and we have the entire internet to contend with.

There were two words that weren’t mentioned at all during the entire 18 years I attended schools in the UK. Mental health. Come to think of it, mental illness wasn’t mentioned either. Thankfully for the next generation of young people, that will change.

The government recently announced the introduction of mental health lessons in schools along with “mental health support teams” who will work with young people in schools to help them measure their own mental wellbeing. A recently published green paper outlined the government’s plans to make mental health education a compulsory component of the curriculum in state-funded schools and colleges. By 2025, every school and college in England will have a “designated lead” trained to spot mental health issues in students. Suicide prevention charity Samaritans expressed support for the move, stating that “learning to deal with your emotions is as important as learning to read and write.”  Read more…

Donald Trump’s election was a ‘traumatic experience’ for many college students

TwitterFacebook

To say that the 2016 presidential election had a profound impact on the American psyche might be an understatement.

In fact, new research suggests that for many, the experience was actually traumatic.

In a survey of roughly 800 college students, 25 percent reported such high levels of stress after the election that researchers likened it to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, according to a new study published in the Journal of American College Health

Throughout the election, researchers noticed some pretty strong reactions in young adults. But the day after the election, lead researcher Melissa Hagan taught two classes where she saw that students were visibly upset — some were even crying.  Read more…

5 ways to talk about mental health that’ll leave you feeling better

TwitterFacebook

When I went to the hospital to give birth to my first child, I tried to get through labor without an epidural. A nurse came into my room and watched me grimace with pain during a contraction. I was convinced that good moms didn’t give their kids drugs before they’re even born. The nurse asked me, “Do you routinely punch yourself in the face?”

I was shocked by her question. Laughing at the idea, I replied, “No.” She went on to tell me that if I did routinely sock myself, I could continue experiencing pain with her blessing, but that it didn’t need to be this way. I didn’t need to make it harder than it was already going to be. I wouldn’t get a gold star on my son’s birth certificate that differentiated me from the other moms. We all wanted the same thing: a safe birth and a healthy baby.  Read more…
