Tesla owners will soon be able to try Autopilot for free

Tesla owners will soon be able to give Autopilot a try — for free.

That’s what Elon Musk said at the electric car company’s annual shareholder meeting in Silicon Valley Tuesday afternoon.

Musk — who first came on stage bizarrely teary and on the verge of crying — eventually calmed down and started his presentation about all things Tesla.

After addressing concerns about Model 3 production and pricing and announcing a new Gigafactory for building batteries in Shanghai, he casually mentioned that next month the company would be offering free trials of the car’s semi-autonomous software, Autopilot.  Read more…

Consumer Reports flips, recommends Tesla Model 3 after braking fix

TwitterFacebook

Only about a week after the independent review publication Consumer Reports determined it couldn’t recommend the all-electric Tesla Model 3 sedan, it’s flipped.

On Wednesday, CR came out with an updated overview of the newest Tesla, noting it had “big flaws.” Now it’s recommending the vehicle.

Last week, issues with braking distance and touchscreen controls prevented the review site from recommending the more affordably priced sedan. After Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised “over-the-air” updates to improve braking, CR gave the car another chance. Read more…

Consumer Reports snubs Tesla on Model 3 recommendation

TwitterFacebook

Tesla and the independent product review publication Consumer Reports have had a hot-and-cold relationship for many years.

The buyer’s guide has been smitten and quick to praise the electric car maker at times. But on Monday, Consumer Reports said it couldn’t recommend the new Model 3 sedan after finally testing the electric vehicle.

The report said “we found plenty to like” about the affordable Model 3 that starts at $35,000, but ultimately, “our testers also found flaws—big flaws—such as long stopping distances in our emergency braking test and difficult-to-use controls.”

Leaked Tesla email says Model 3 will go to 24/7 production

Tesla on temporary Model 3 production shutdown: Nothing to see here

TwitterFacebook

Tesla’s implemented a Model 3 production break this week as the company struggles to meet demand, reportedly catching employees off guard.

All eyes are on Model 3 production as Tesla has been lagging behind its production goals for the sedan and CEO Elon Musk has stepped in to oversee the process — even sleeping at the factory to get more cars on the road.

For Tesla’s part, the company says the break was planned and is necessary to increase production.

But BuzzFeed reported Monday that employees were blindsided by the multi-day shutdown. Employees told the outlet they would have to use vacation days, stay home without pay, or — if lucky — get paid to work somewhere else within Tesla. Read more…

Elon Musk lets customers know when that dual-motor Tesla Model 3 will arrive

TwitterFacebook

Those Tesla Model 3 orders are taking awhile, but at least the electric carmaker’s CEO Elon Musk is keeping customers in the loop.

Over the weekend, Musk, who is apparently sleeping at the factory as he takes over production of the behind-schedule electric sedan, responded to a tweet about a dual-motor version. Musk said to expect the special dual-motor Model 3 configuration in July — the car company needs to focus on the basics first. The dual-motor design was leaked earlier this year.

Elon Musk will sleep at Tesla factory to oversee Model 3 production

TwitterFacebook

Tesla has lots and lots of cars to build so Elon Musk will be sleeping at his electric car factory.

That’s what the Tesla CEO tweeted Monday after an Information article about his deeper involvement in Model 3 production went out.

Musk bristled at the premise of the story: That he was stepping in to oversee the electric sedan’s production as senior VP of engineering Doug Field was being pushed out.

Musk insisted it’s “better to divide & conquer, so I’m back to sleeping at factory.” The billionaire noted, “Car biz is hell.” Read more…

Tesla reportedly wants Model 3 factory workers to prove the ‘haters’ wrong

Tesla has reportedly asked its Model 3 factory workers to prove the “haters” wrong by stepping up car production. In a memo obtained by Bloomberg, Tesla engineering chief Doug Field told staff it would be an “incredible victory” to exceed the production of 300 Model 3 vehicles a day. Field’s memo, reportedly sent on March […]
