At least Elon Musk can celebrate the Tesla Model 3’s perfect safety rating

TwitterFacebook

Finally, some news Tesla can brag about.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently tested the new Tesla Model 3 (yes, the same car that forced CEO Elon Musk to sleep at the Tesla factory). The results? A perfect five-star safety rating for the rear-wheel and all-wheel drive versions of the Tesla Model 3.

Tesla, buried in endless problems like SEC lawsuits and terrible Elon Musk tweets, made sure to put the safety test results front and center Sunday.

In a blog post titled, “Model 3 achieves the lowest probability of injury of any vehicle ever tested by NHTSA,” the company boasted that “not only has Model 3 achieved a perfect 5-star safety rating in every category and sub-category, but NHTSA’s tests also show that it has the lowest probability of injury of all cars the safety agency has ever tested.” Read more…

Red Teslas costs more now, but people will still pay for the paint color

TwitterFacebook

Tesla’s paint colors were whittled down in the past few days to help ramp up production and now the electric car maker is upping the price for its iconic red option.

For the Model 3, the more affordable, backlogged sedan, a red “multi-coat” paint job went up to $2,500 this weekend. It used to be $2,000 for the red color. As Electrek pointed out, when the Model 3 was first produced red cars were available for $1,000.

A Tesla spokesperson wrote in an email Sunday: “We occasionally adjust pricing and available options to best reflect the value of our products and to streamline our manufacturing operations. Yesterday’s adjustment to our red multi-coat paint is the latest example of that.” Read more…

Elon Musk moves 2 Tesla colors ‘off menu’

TwitterFacebook

Seven paint options for future Teslas will soon dwindle to five.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted on Monday night that Tesla would “simplify manufacturing” by removing Obsidian Black Metallic and Silver Metallic from the menu of colors as of Wednesday, possibly so it can catch up on missed production deadlines and fulfill  orders already placed by consumers who want to drive its new electric sedan, the Model 3

Moving 2 of 7 Tesla colors off menu on Wednesday to simplify manufacturing. Obsidian Black & Metallic Silver will still be available as special request, but at higher price.

Your Tesla is probably vulnerable to hackers, but there’s an easy fix

TwitterFacebook

Hackers can likely quickly and easily steal your Tesla Model S, but this high-tech heist comes with a catch: There’s a simple way to prevent it.

Researchers claim to have found a method to essentially clone the wireless key fobs Tesla owners use to unlock and start their cars — thus allowing them to drive away with your ride — with only around $600 worth of equipment. Oh yeah, and the encryption built into the keys as a protection against this very attack barely even offers a speed bump.

On Tesla’s earnings day, watch for these 4 indicators

A little more than a year ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk handed over the first Model 3 electric vehicles to employees at a splashy event in Hawthorne, California. It’s been (production) hell ever since, a term Musk has used repeatedly in the past 12 months as the electric automaker struggled to ramp up production of […]

People in the U.S. and Canada can now order a Tesla Model 3 without a reservation

TwitterFacebook

North American buyers looking for a mid-sized electric sedan donning a “T” sign, rejoice: Tesla has opened up orders for its Model 3 electric car for everyone in the U.S. and Canada.

Until now, buyers had to cash out a $1,000 fee to reserve their spot in line for the Model 3, but — as reported by Electrek — they can now go ahead to Tesla’s website and order the car without a reservation.

Buyers can currently only order three variants of the car: the $49,000 rear-wheel drive version, the $53,000 dual-motor all-wheel drive version (both of which include a long-range battery and premium interior trim), and the $64,000 Performance version of the latter.  Read more…

Tesla adds autonomous parking mode to Model 3

The Model 3 can now park itself. Called Summon, the feature is now available on the company’s new sedan.
