Qualcomm expands its PC bet with its new 7nm 8cx platform

Qualcomm wants to become a major player in the PC/laptop market. Now that there is Windows 10 on ARM, that’s more than a pipe dream, but in its earliest iterations, those Qualcomm-based Windows 10 laptops used the Snapdragon 850 system on a chip that was specifically designed for PCs but still very much a direct […]

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8cx chip for Windows 10 laptops could end Intel’s dominance

TwitterFacebook

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips dominate mobile — you’ll find them in almost every Android phone and tablet — and now they’re ready to invade Intel’s main turf: PCs.

On the third day of its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, the world’s largest mobile chipmaker unveiled the Snapdragon 8cx system-on-a-chip (SoC). It’s created with a 7-nanometer process, similar to Apple’s A12 and A12X chips, which are in the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR and new iPad Pros.

Qualcomm previously tested the PC waters with the Snapdragon 835 and 850 chips, but now it’s ready for a full assault on Intel’s territory. This could very well be the beginning of the end to Intel’s vice-like grip powering PCs. Read more…

8 ways Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chip will change smartphones for the better

TwitterFacebook

Qualcomm’s next-gen mobile chip, the Snapdragon 855, is official and will be looked back as a cornerstone to the 5G-ification of everything.

The world’s largest mobile chipmaker held back on sharing extensive details during the first day of its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui, Hawaii on Monday. But now the curtain’s been fully lifted and we know exactly how the tiny little chip will push mobile forward.

TL;DR: Get ready for 5G, more AI, faster performance, improved gaming, and — what I’m personally most excited for — portrait mode-like 4K video recording where backgrounds are blurred out in real-time. Read more…

5G’s biggest challenge is making sure it actually works as promised

TwitterFacebook

5G, 5G, 5 gee.

To most people, 5G is merely the successor to 4G LTE — the next generation of cellular connectivity for your phone.

And yes, that’s what 5G will be for most people as carriers worldwide begin deploying the high-speed wireless connectivity starting in 2019.

But that’s also a serious mischaracterization of 5G because it isn’t just faster cellular service that’ll enable you to stream high-resolution videos, games, and VR.

5G is virtually a complete overhaul of connectivity. It will be fast enough to replace home WiFi and as such will enable devices to truly always remain connected no matter where you are. 5G also has much higher bandwidth to support more devices that can connect simultaneously with less or no latency. A new generation of smartphones is nearly upon us.

Starting in 2019, Android phone makers will start shipping new devices with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 system-on-a-chip (SoC), which’ll be the first chip to support 5G. That’s right, mobile 5G — which has been mostly company promises and marketing hype up to this point — is now a step closer to being something you can hold in your hand.

In a meeting in advance of the announcement, Qualcomm Senior Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Alex Katouzian was light on specific details about how much faster the Snapdragon 855 is compared to the current Snapdragon 845. Read more…

Read the mud-slinging pitches Facebook’s PR firm sent us

Facebook’s latest PR crisis has cast a lurid spotlight on a GOP-led publicity firm called Definers Public Affairs, after a New York Times investigation revealed last week the firm had sought to discredit Facebook critics by, in one instance, linking them to the liberal financier George Soros — a long-time target of anti-semitic conspiracy theories. Get ready for an explosion of Alexa-powered headphones

Get ready for the Alexa headphone explosion.

Up till now, there haven’t been too many headphones that integrate Amazon Alexa. There are certainly some you can buy — from high-end noise-canceling cans that fit over the ears to true-wireless models — but even when Alexa is present, its abilities are limited to a subset of what it can do on an Echo smart speaker.

That’s about to change in a big wayQualcomm has developed an audio chipset specifically for headphones to integrate digital assistants like Alexa, and a reference design that incorporates the technology: a neckband-style pair of headphones lets you call up Amazon’s digital assistant at the touch of a button. Qualcomm doubles down on claims that Apple stole chip secrets for Intel

If you happen to crack open that fancy little iPhone XS casing on your new phone, you’ll notice there’s a dwindling amount of Qualcomm chips in there and that they’re increasingly being replaced by Intel hardware.
