Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips dominate mobile — you’ll find them in almost every Android phone and tablet — and now they’re ready to invade Intel’s main turf: PCs.
On the third day of its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, the world’s largest mobile chipmaker unveiled the Snapdragon 8cx system-on-a-chip (SoC). It’s created with a 7-nanometer process, similar to Apple’s A12 and A12X chips, which are in the iPhone XS/XS Max/XR and new iPad Pros.
Qualcomm previously tested the PC waters with the Snapdragon 835 and 850 chips, but now it’s ready for a full assault on Intel’s territory. This could very well be the beginning of the end to Intel’s vice-like grip powering PCs. Read more…

The world’s largest mobile chipmaker held back on sharing extensive details during the first day of its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui, Hawaii on Monday. But now the curtain’s been fully lifted and we know exactly how the tiny little chip will push mobile forward.

To most people, 5G is merely the successor to 4G LTE — the next generation of cellular connectivity for your phone.
And yes, that’s what 5G will be for most people as carriers worldwide begin deploying the high-speed wireless connectivity starting in 2019.
But that’s also a serious mischaracterization of 5G because it isn’t just faster cellular service that’ll enable you to stream high-resolution videos, games, and VR.
5G is virtually a complete overhaul of connectivity. It will be fast enough to replace home WiFi and as such will enable devices to truly always remain connected no matter where you are. 5G also has much higher bandwidth to support more devices that can connect simultaneously with less or no latency. A new generation of smartphones is nearly upon us.
Starting in 2019, Android phone makers will start shipping new devices with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 system-on-a-chip (SoC), which’ll be the first chip to support 5G. That’s right, mobile 5G — which has been mostly company promises and marketing hype up to this point — is now a step closer to being something you can hold in your hand.
