Selfie tourism is killing these incredibly cute creatures

TwitterFacebook

Warning: this article contains images of animal abuse which some may find distressing.

A small furry creature huddles close to a tree branch on the edge of the forest. Its large, globular eyes are shut (it’s daytime, and so now it sleeps); its strong hands and arms hold firm even as it slumbers.

In a deep sleep, the creature doesn’t hear the rustling of approaching predators. Before it knows what’s happening, it’s plucked from the tree and bundled into a bag. When it is finally taken out into the blinding light of day, metal pliers are forced into its mouth to clip its teeth. Then it is shoved into a wire cage, alone and in pain. Read more…

Rejoice because Facebook is finally getting rid of third-party app invites

TwitterFacebook

Facebook may still have the huge problem involving the scourge of fake news to deal with, but its gone and done something that will decrease your Facebook rage — just a smidge — by removing third-party app invites.

That’s right, no longer will you roll your eyes and curse technology every time your aunt invites you to play Candy Cane Crush or Farmville 4: The Farmening or whatever terrible game is on Facebook or connected to Facebook.

The move was announced in a post to Facebook’s Developers blog on Thursday afternoon. The app invites won’t be supported with the newest Facebook software development kit and, while older versions will still support it, those invites will end February 2018. Read more…

One of Facebook’s most popular pages was mysteriously shut down for a few hours

TwitterFacebook

The popular Facebook Page for Unilad with 34 million “likes” disappeared from the social network on Friday, suggesting that Facebook blocked the page.

It was back up around 10:10 a.m. ET. The temporary shutdown caused panic among the publisher community, reminding them that they operate at the whims of Facebook.

Unilad’s 34 million “likes” were acquired over the past six years. As was shown Friday, they could all be taken away in a few clicks by Facebook.

This is a reminder to publishers everywhere not to put all your eggs in one basket. UNILAD had 34,000,000 fans on Facebook before it was removed.https://t.co/sIjp6ZS8LT

Twitter confirms it’s testing a tweetstorm feature

TwitterFacebook

As if upping its character limit to 280 wasn’t enough, Twitter is testing a dedicated feature to make it easier for users to tweetstorm.

The test first surfaced in September, but Twitter is now confirming the experiment, which is currently live only to people who are part of Twitter’s Experiments Program

The latest version of the feature, which was spotted by Android Police, allows users to add multiple tweets to a single thread using a new “+” icon in the tweet composer. It’s not clear if it limits you to a specific number of tweets, though it appears each one has the same 280-character limit as the rest of Twitter. Read more…
