‘Solo’ had the biggest opening ever … for a heist movie

TwitterFacebook

Han Solo has got himself in a whole bunch of money troubles again — Earth money this time, not galactic credits.

Solo: A Star Wars Story made $101 million at the U.S. box office over the four-day Memorial Day weekend. That was far short of the $130 million Disney had projected, and the weakest opening weekend for any Star Wars live action film since 2002’s Attack of the Clones

But if you set its stellar expectations aside, Solo has already smashed box office records … from a certain point of view.

Not only was it the strongest May movie opening since 2014, but the genre that Solo belongs in — the heist movie — has never seen numbers like this. Mega-hits like Inception, Fast Five and Ocean’s Eleven, not to mention Oscar winners like Argo, could only dream of a $100 million opening weekend. All 11 Star Wars movies, ranked — including ‘Solo’

With the release of Solo, Lucasfilm marks another milestone: this is the 11th Star Wars movie to land in theaters.

Yeah, that’s right — 11 movies, not 10. The eight Skywalker saga episodes and the two spin-off films were not the only one to get an official release. There’s one cinematic stepchild that Lucasfilm would rather forget.

And don’t worry, we don’t spoil anything about Solo other than its ranking. In reverse order, then, starting with that unwanted stepchild:

11. The Clone Wars (2008)

This mess was initially created as the opening batch of episodes for the Cartoon Network series Clone Wars. Then George Lucas made the baffling last-minute decision to release this barely-hung-together content as a movie. Lucasfilm’s key merchandising licensees weren’t even notified in advance, so it’s possible Lucas himself wasn’t exactly proud of the effort.  Read more…

The sexiest ships in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

TwitterFacebook

Star Wars has some great ships, but it also has some great ships, and Solo is no exception. You know the ships I mean – ships that make you want to take straight to space, don a cape, and punch it right into hyperdrive.

Friendships. Relationships. Situationships. Star Wars has is it all, from the day Luke kissed his sister to the time Anakin went blind with love, or something. Let’s dive into the ships of Solo and wonder how anyone had time to make the Kessel Run when there was so much flirting to get on with.

I’m A Star Wars fan, but I’m not excited for ‘Solo.’ What’s going on?

TwitterFacebook

Like many people who are alive and have eyes, I’m a Star Wars fan. It’s an easy thing to love, what with the family drama, space fencing, and relatively straightforward good-vs.-evil storylines. I adore the new and old trilogies and have a place in my heart for a combined forty-seven minutes of all three prequel movies, which is more than a lot of people will give them.

Still, I’m not excited for a Solo: A Star Wars Story. I wasn’t thrilled when they announced it, I’ve remained neutral through its turbulent creation, and now that its theatrical release is imminent, I’m faced with the reality that the sweet, sweet hype a Star Wars movie usually generates within me simply isn’t going to show up. I don’t feel negatively — I feel nothing, and that upsets me.  Read more…

Ron Howard: ‘Solo’ is more of a George Lucas movie than you know

TwitterFacebook

He may have retired from the galaxy far, far away after he sold his company for $4 billion in 2012. But Star Wars creator George Lucas has his fingerprints all over the latest movie in the Disney-Lucasfilm canon — according to his friend, Solo director Ron Howard.

Not only did Lucas come up with the idea for a Han Solo spin-off first — long before Rogue One was a thing — but he was there on set to offer advice on how his creation would behave. And he even tried his hand at acting: pitching one scene, “he played Han Solo,” Howard says.

In a wide-ranging interview with Mashable, Howard also recalled how Lucas first told him about Star Wars on the set of American Graffiti in 1972, explained why the look of the film is a homage to  Lucas’ signature style, and dangled the possibility that Lucas could return to direct more Star Wars films — if the fans wanted.  Read more…

Who’s who in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

TwitterFacebook

No major spoilers here, but this story does discuss plot points previously revealed in other marketing materials, stories, and interviews. Proceed at your own risk.

From a certain point of view, Solo is an old Star Wars story: It’s set way in the past, before Han ever even met Luke and Leia.

But for our purposes, it’s a new one. By that, we mean it tells a tale we’ve never heard before, set on planets we’ve never seen, involving people we’ve never met and unfamiliar versions of people we have.

Which means even if you’re a longtime Star Wars fan, you might find yourself watching the Solo trailers and wondering who the hell all these folks are. So here’s a handy rundown of who’s who in Solo – new and old characters alike. Read more…

‘Solo’ is something new in Star Wars. Old-school fans will love it.

TwitterFacebook

If you were to stray into an in-progress screening of Solo without knowing its title, you’d be able to identify it as a Star Wars film pretty much immediately.

We’re never more than a moment away from the familiar look and feel of the franchise: blaster fire, screaming ships, delightful droids, exotic and spartan planets, the sonic warble of alien creatures, the ham-radio chatter of Imperial stormtroopers.

That said, Solo manages to stretch the possibilities of Star Wars in interesting new directions, just  as The Last Jedi did last December. But unlike that movie, which was forced to make difficult choices in resolving its predecessor’s cliffhangers, Solo has plenty of room to maneuver — and should surprise and delight even the old-school fans who enter the theater heavy with expectations.  Read more…

The ‘Solo’ premiere gave us some of the biggest Star Wars surprises yet

TwitterFacebook

HOLLYWOOD — When the invites came in for the world premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 10, the date was curious enough to raise the eyebrows of a Wookiee.

The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi: all three Star Wars movies of the Disney era so far had shut down multiple blocks with show-stopping Saturday night festivities. (We reported on them here, here and here)Solo would have its coming out party on … a Thursday

What? The galaxy’s greatest scoundrel didn’t deserve a weekend-level rager too? Was this a subtle sign that Lucasfilm was embarrassed by the Young Han Solo flick, which infamously changed directors midstream, and was trying to brush it under the red carpet? Would Hollywood Boulevard not shut down for Star Wars this time? The longer the details were delayed, the more suspect it seemed.  Read more…
