Tesla’s new ‘Megachargers’ will give its Semis power for 400 miles in 30 minutes

Tesla’s new Semi trucks are slated to boast a range of up to 500 miles per charge — but powering up those batteries will still be important to the truckers who have to drive long routes.

The automaker will introduce an entirely new kind of charging station for its new big rigs: Megachargers. The units will be even more powerful than the Supercharger network Tesla already offers for its cars.

Like the Supercharger network, the Megachargers will be built around the world to support the fleet, as Musk claimed truckers will be able to “travel anywhere in the world via the Megachargers.” Read more…

Elon Musk says Tesla Semi trucks are BAMFs

Elon Musk says Tesla’s new Semi trucks are BAMFs.

Yes, for those of you at home, that’s the widely known acronym for “Bad Ass Mother F***er.”

Musk playfully threw out the acronym as a “scientific term” Tesla’s development team used as they designed the new big rigs. The name sounds ridiculous — but the specs, if they wind up being legit, are actually pretty impressive.

Musk claims the Semi can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just five seconds, well faster than traditional diesel trucks. That’s the cab by itself or with an empty trailer loaded on. Read more…

Tesla will reveal its semi-truck design tonight in a highly anticipated event in Hawthorne, California, reaching another goal in founder Elon Musk’s “Master Plan” for the company.

The semi is the automaker’s first shot at disrupting the trucking industry in the same way it brought all-electric cars to the forefront of the consumer auto conversation — but Tesla won’t be alone in its attempt to bring electric, autonomous big rigs to the world’s highways.

There are multiple next-gen trucking projects in the works from all manner of players, from fledgling startups with one killer concept to major conglomerates launching new brands. Some of the ventures focus on creating all-electric powertrains for heavy-duty vehicles, while others add self-driving features and new fleet logistics systems to standard rigs — but they all want to shake up the trucking industry.  Read more…
