The NFL and Verizon’s new streaming deal will bring games to all mobile carriers

Verizon will no longer be the exclusive U.S. mobile carrier for watching NFL games on smartphones and tablets. According to an announcement this morning, the company – and TechCrunch’s parent, by way of Oath – says that it has closed a new deal with the National Football League that will allow it to stream live games to fans regardless of mobile network.
The deal includes… Read More

The NFL signs a new Verizon deal that’s great for consumers

TwitterFacebook

NFL rights are the biggest in sports media—and the closest thing we have to weather vane for where our jumbled world of media and tech are headed.

On Monday, news broke that Verizon had agreed to a new five-year deal to stream NFL games to mobile devices (smartphones and tablets). The telecom giant is paying around $2 billion for the rights.

Here’s the big thing: Verizon has no exclusivity. They’ll host the games for anyone and everyone no matter what network they’re on. And this kicks in for the upcoming NFL playoffs.

This is good for NFL fans. Getting online access to football games had become a relatively byzantine adventure. With Verizon hosting the games but not having exclusivity—if you’re an AT&T or T-Mobile wireless customer you previously couldn’t access the games—you’ll be able to watch no matter what service you subscribe to. Net neutrality protestors hit Verizon stores — including these two dudes in snowy Fairbanks, Alaska

TwitterFacebook

Defenders of a free and open internet rallied in front of Verizon stores across the U.S. Thursday. The fight to save net neutrality even made it to the only Verizon store in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Snow didn’t stop at least a couple sign-wielding protesters from showing up at the Verizon store in Fairbanks. The state’s only other Verizon locations are 360 miles away in Anchorage.

Even David Karp himself doesn’t use Yahoo Mail

TwitterFacebook

Did anyone else notice that David Karp’s resignation letter from Tumblr was clearly written in Gmail?

That’s right, Karp, we caught you. Tumblr’s founder and former CEO doesn’t use Yahoo mail, the mail service of Tumblr’s parent company.

Your proof: the email Karp sent to his staff explaining his resignation. The layout, font, and interface of his screenshot are clearly that of Google’s email service — not Yahoo’s.

Tumblr did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

In the letter, Karp states that “This team and place has been my family and home for most of my adult life.” Clearly, however, it hasn’t been the home of his emails correspondence.  Read more…

Net Neutrality advocates plan protests for December 7 at Verizon stores

On December 14, the FCC will vote on whether or not to roll back Obama-era policies protecting a free and open internet. In fact, during yesterday’s announcement of the upcoming vote, the FCC neglected to mention the historic 22 million comments on the issue, the majority of which were negative.
In response, protests are being held on December 7 at Verizon retail stores across the country. Read More
