‘Downward Dog’ is the TV equivalent of an emotional support animal

TwitterFacebook

If 2018 has shown us anything definitive, it is that human beings are garbage.

Dogs, on the other hand, remain literal angels whom we do not deserve.

Case in point: Last year, ABC had in its hands one of the purest, most hysterical, most heartwarming comedies on television. It was basically an Office-style mockumentary, but from the perspective of a dog who’s the only one who gets to speak directly to camera in confessional-style interviews.

Through the lens of its irresistibly charming protagonist, Martin the Dog, we see the absurdity of human behavior. But it’s also a reminder of the emotional lives our animal companions lead — like the stress of needing at least fourteen hours of sleep a day, while also finding time to protect your person from the dangers of vacuums. Aliens kill an old man and turn him into a W.M.D. in ‘Inuyashiki: Last Hero,’ a bizarre must-watch

TwitterFacebook

It’s hard to imagine there’s a large target audience for a hyper-violent animated show about an unloved old man who gets blown up by aliens shortly after a cancer diagnosis and transformed, immediately, into a weapon of mass destruction intent on defending the dignity of the homeless and other cast-outs — but here it is anyway, Inuyashiki: Last Hero, a miserable and addictive sci-fi action series streaming now on Amazon.

Often quite upsetting (if you don’t think you can get past watching an infant drown in a tub filled with his dad’s own blood, this is, assuredly, not the show for you), Inuyashiki nonetheless serves as a remarkable and unexpected superhero story for 2018, when everything feels cynical and each new entry in an unending supply of phone notifications makes the bile rise just a bit higher in your throat. Harlots is the other woman-driven Hulu show everyone should be talking about

TwitterFacebook

There’s a show on Hulu about women who are trying to survive in a patriarchal society. They dress in easily recognizable outfits. Better-situated people call them sluts or whores, and the men they have sex with are sometimes horribly violent and always transactional. The worst thing that could happen to these women is being sent to “the colonies,” but that’s only if they aren’t hanged first. It’s a fascinating look at the micro-worlds women create to protect themselves and their agency, and also there are at least nine towering, silly-looking powdered wigs per episode.

Oh, right. Not that show. The other one. This one’s actually a lot of fun. Read more…

‘Dietland’ is a trippy revenge fantasy designed to make you feel weird

TwitterFacebook

Describing AMC’s Dietland is hard.

On its face, it’s the story of an overweight woman who is trying to lose enough pounds to qualify for lap band surgery. After 20 minutes of watching, it’s a darkly comedic satire of the culture that asks women to adhere to conventional beauty standards at the risk of damaging themselves.

After three episodes… it’s something entirely different.

Dietland is based on a book by Sarai Walker that was praised for its feminist ideals and wolf-in-sheep’s-clothing premise. The show takes these ideals and runs with them, using its exaggerated characters to shine an increasingly harsh light on rape culture and the millions of heaping slights that women are subjected to in a world that views them as objects first and people second.  Read more…

Hari Kondabolu’s ‘Warn Your Relatives’ is the best detox from hate speech

TwitterFacebook

It’s been quite a week for TV personalities with a penchant for hate speech and “controversial” opinions that just hurt people. In the wake of Roseanne‘s cancellation, many are wondering what celebrities can and can’t say – or what views they should espouse in the first place.

Hari Kondabolu’s Warn Your Relatives premiered on Netflix May 8, a culmination of months and years of the comic’s work. In the hourlong special, Kondabolu tackles the rise of white supremacy and both casual and severe racism – but he also reads hilarious texts from his mother and pontificates with gusto about mangoes.  Read more…
