An Australian suburb was the hottest place on Earth yesterday

TwitterFacebook

The suburb of Penrith in Sydney, Australia isn’t a hot destination for tourists, but it was a searing place — temperature wise at least — on Sunday.

Penrith hit a 80-year high with temps of 47.3 degrees Celsius (117.14 degrees Fahrenheit) at 3:25 p.m., just shy of missing the area’s record high set in 1939.

It’s a far different situation to the “stupid-level cold” the U.S. is experiencing, thanks to the bomb cyclone wreaking havoc along the country’s eastern seaboard.

#SydneyHeat: Sorry, in our earlier checks we missed a 47.8 degrees C temperature recorded at an old #Richmond station (now closed) in 1939. 47.3 today still beats the previous #Penrith record.

What sparked the ‘bomb cyclone’? Huge temperature contrasts, jet stream energy

It all started innocently enough.
Shortly before New Year’s celebrations kicked off in the Southeast, a record-cold air mass blew in from the north. This air had a direct connection to the Arctic, spilling out as if someone left the Northern He…

Even weather experts are in awe of the ‘bomb cyclone’

TwitterFacebook

The bomb cyclone is here, and it’s astounding even the most seasoned weather experts.

This storm intensified at one of the fastest rates ever recorded for an East Coast, non-tropical storm system, which caught the attention of even the most jaded weather geeks. On Twitter, they’re marveling at images of the storm, which — it must be admitted — does look incredibly striking as it hits the East Coast.

It’s important to note that no one is happy about the contents of the storm. After all, it’s dangerous and likely to hurt people in its path. Instead, Weather Twitter is focused on the stunning satellite imagery: the comma-shaped cyclone, eye, and lingering snow seen from above. Read more…

Intense video shows snowy pileup involving more than 75 vehicles

TwitterFacebook

Snow caused a massive crash involving dozens of vehicles on a New York highway on Tuesday afternoon.

The entire eastbound side of I-90 outside Buffalo was closed after a car accident caused a huge, multi-car pileup. Facebook user Kadire Flowers filmed a portion of the accident from the westbound side of the highway. The video shows numerous cars blocking the highway in near white-out conditions.

Erie County’s Executive Mark Poloncarz‏ tweeted that 22 cars were directly involved in the crash and more than 75 cars were involved in total — some stuck behind the crash. A blizzard warning was issued by the National Weather Service through 1 a.m. on Wednesday, and Poloncarz issued a travel advisory for Northern Erie County.   Read more…

A meteorological ‘bomb’ is set to go off along the East Coast, and dangerous cold will soon follow

TwitterFacebook

An unusually powerful storm is threatening the East Coast of the U.S. this week with heavy snow, high winds, and record-shattering cold not seen in some places since the early 20th Century — if at all.

The storm will be the result of a combination of three strong pieces of atmospheric energy, known to meteorologists as shortwaves.

Think of these shortwaves as protein bars for storm formation. This particular storm, which is already beginning to form off the coast of Florida, will devour enough of them to allow it to become so powerful that it will contain hurricane force winds by the time it moves off the Mid-Atlantic coast late Wednesday night.  Read more…

And that’s not all.

Some lucky Boston residents awake early enough on Christmas morning got treated to one of the rarest and most treasured of weather events: thundersnow.
