Calling all data hoarders: The Samsung T5 1TB portable SSD is $72 off — its lowest price ever on Amazon

TwitterFacebook

Not having external storage for your laptop is like ignoring Apple when it says to back up iCloud: You’re safe if literally nothing goes wrong, but if anything crashes or your internal memory fills up, you’re screwed.

The Samsung T5 is one of the best portable SSD devices on the internet and is the one everyone wishes they could afford. Today, it’s $72 off — and its lowest price on Amazon ever.

Don’t let its pocket size fool you — the T5 packs 1 TB of storage, faster read/write speeds than its predecessors, and AES 256-bit hardware data encryption into that compact body. (That’s the same kind of data protection that the NSA uses. So.)  Read more…

There are some things that just don’t happen more than once in a lifetime — like seeing a celebrity in public or finding a Samsung QLED TV for over $1,000 off.

We can help with the TV one. (Lady Gaga hangs out here though, so maybe we can help with both.)

Spend your holiday bonus on this self-flying 4K camera drone that just went on sale

TwitterFacebook

A car payment or some other responsible adult purchase is probably wise — BUT — if you’re expecting a nice fat holiday bonus in the coming weeks, it’s time to pick up a Hover Camera Passport drone.

Winner of the Red Dot Design and iF Product Design awards, this self-flying camera drone uses facial recognition technology to capture 4K footage of you as you go about your day. And if that isn’t cool enough, it also relies on your hand gestures alone to capture panoramic videos totally autonomously.

It’s super portable, too, weighing in at just over half a pound and capable of fitting inside any small purse or bag — always ready to record your next adventure, wherever it may be. Bring it to your family’s annual New Years Day brunch, and you’re virtually guaranteed to be the most popular cousin in attendance (though you best steer clear of your aunt’s fine china).  Read more…

Tom Cruise breaks silence on the ‘soap opera effect’ and we couldn’t be happier

TwitterFacebook

Hollywood chimed in Tuesday on something it actually knows a thing or two about: film and video technology. And you should be glad it did.

In a short video attached to the home video release of Mission Impossible: Fallout, ageless star Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie explain, plainly and directly (from the set of Top Gun: Maverick no less), the modern scourge of TV technology: video interpolation, better known as the “soap opera effect.”

I’m taking a quick break from filming to tell you the best way to watch Mission: Impossible Fallout (or any movie you love) at homepic.twitter.com/oW2eTm1IUA

Roku’s Premiere streaming boxes are tiny, cheap, and support 4K

TwitterFacebook

Roku doesn’t believe that there’s one streaming player for everyone.

Launching early next month, two new Roku streaming players focus on affordability and 4K support. The Premiere and Premiere+ will be $39.99 and $49.99 respectively. Both are cheaper than Amazon’s $69.99 4K Fire TV.

Both of these are tiny and fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. During a briefing with Roku, I first thought these were new streaming sticks, which tend to be watered-down versions of a full-on player. However, it quickly became clear that, although the form factor is small, these are full-featured streaming devices. Read more…
