Tom Cruise breaks silence on the ‘soap opera effect’ and we couldn’t be happier

TwitterFacebook

Hollywood chimed in Tuesday on something it actually knows a thing or two about: film and video technology. And you should be glad it did.

In a short video attached to the home video release of Mission Impossible: Fallout, ageless star Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie explain, plainly and directly (from the set of Top Gun: Maverick no less), the modern scourge of TV technology: video interpolation, better known as the “soap opera effect.”

I’m taking a quick break from filming to tell you the best way to watch Mission: Impossible Fallout (or any movie you love) at homepic.twitter.com/oW2eTm1IUA

Bring Thandie Newton back to ‘Mission: Impossible,’ you cowards

TwitterFacebook

Some spoilers for Mission: Impossible – Fallout ahead.

The Mission: Impossible series is one of the rare cinematic universes that doesn’t put too much stock in its own continuity.

The only common cast members in all six films are Tom Cruise and Ving Rhames. The movies rarely reference events that happened previously in the timeline. There are blessedly few Easter eggs sprinkled in.

And it’s that previous lack of dedication to worldbuilding that makes Mission: Impossible – Fallout such a different and interesting installment in the franchise.

‘Mission: Impossible’ is only the tip of an iceberg that could sink MoviePass

TwitterFacebook

MoviePass is a great idea that only works if its “see all movies in theaters” promise can be fulfilled. Unfortunately for subscribers interested in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, that wasn’t the case over the weekend.

Subscribers were already up in arms after app issues temporarily barred them from checking out any movies last Thursday. Even more troubling, the issue was later revealed to be caused by a missed payment owed to one of the service’s ticket suppliers.

It took a $5 million loan secured by MoviePass parent Helios and Matheson Analytics to fix the situation, the second such service outage in July 2018. But even that couldn’t prepare subscribers for what happened this weekend, when the newly released Mission: Impossible – Fallout wasn’t available at all. Read more…

Math determines that the more Tom Cruise runs, the better his movies are

Arguably, Tom Cruise running his goddamn ass off is the glue that holds the Mission: Impossible franchise together. And now, we have math to prove it.

‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ is what IMAX screens were made for

TwitterFacebook

If you have any interest at all in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, any inkling that you may want to someday, maybe, eventually get around to seeing it, I suggest you do so in the next several weeks, while it’s still in theaters.

Preferably in IMAX, if you can manage it. It’s that kind of movie.

As usual for this franchise, Fallout has a convoluted plot that’s hardly worth the trouble it takes to explain, since it’s really just an excuse to trot around the globe indulging in extravagant set pieces.  Read more…

Henry Cavill is still answering for the mustache CGI in ‘Justice League’

TwitterFacebook

It may have seemed excessive for Mission: Impossible Fallout to ban Henry Cavill from shaving his now-infamous mustache for Justice League reshoots, but the actor assures us in a new interview that shaving was not an option.

“When we decided to go for the mustache, I certainly wasn’t expecting all the events to unfold as they were going to unfold,” Cavill told Empire.

He’s referring to the Justice League reshoots that necessitated CGI removal of said mustache and also gave the internet a lot of much-needed laughs. Read more…

Tom Cruise drops into Super Bowl LII with the first ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ trailer

Even in an afternoon devoted to incredible feats of athleticism, Tom Cruise’s stunt work makes an impression.

Paramount dropped the very first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, featuring the return of Ethan Hunt on yet another convoluted mission that’s really just an excuse for death-defying action. Not that we’re complaining.

Chris McQuarrie is at the helm, making him the first director to return for a second Mission: Impossible movie – he also did the last one, Rogue Nation
