This ‘Blue Planet II’ vessel is now on Airbnb and you can actually go under the sea

What better place for a cosy vacation than the icy depths of the abyss?

Remember Blue Planet II, the show that roundhouse-kicked your soul with the majestic beauty of the ocean? Well, now they’ve teamed up with Airbnb so you can spend three days and two nights on the Alucia — the research vessel featured in the series — and even go down in one of the submersibles.

“You’ll dive deep beneath the waves aboard one of the two submersibles on the ship, the TRITON 3300/3 or the Deep Rover, crafts well equipped for marine science research, shipwreck reconnaissance, and undersea videography,” reads the AirBnb description.  Read more…

Airbnb wants to assure you its vision is ‘good for society’

TwitterFacebook

In an open letter, the head of Airbnb talked about being a relevant, useful, and purposeful company — and most importantly, one that doesn’t destroy society.

CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky laid out the company’s vision in the letter, and stressed the importance of appeasing not just employees and shareholders, but also the wider community outside of the Airbnb bubble — presumably including people who’ve accused the company of pushing rents higher in tight housing markets.

Without naming certain social media platforms (ahem, Facebook), he voiced concerns over the widening political divide.  Read more…

Airbnb now lets users pay less up front for bookings

Airbnb has today announced a new feature that will help users manage their payments on the platform. The feature, aptly albeit unimaginatively named Pay Less Up Front, lets users pay for a part of their trip upon booking and the rest near the time of check-in. Before now, Airbnb users had to pay 100 percent of their booking up front. For weekend trips, that wasn’t such a big deal. But… Read More

Airbnb might actually make virtual reality useful

TwitterFacebook

Airbnb thinks virtual reality could one day help you plan, and survive, your vacation.

As tacky as that sounds, this could actually be a really good use of VR.

Airbnb is making changes. Airbnb’s CEO, Brian Chesky, told Mashable that the new Airbnb hopes to immerse its guests — to connect them not just with accommodations, but with destinations and experiences.

Last November the rental company launched its Trips feature, allowing travelers to organize their vacations in addition to renting rooms, via the Airbnb app. The update allowed users to book restaurants, find experiences and events in nearby communities, and read reviews.  Read more…
