What better place for a cosy vacation than the icy depths of the abyss?

Remember Blue Planet II, the show that roundhouse-kicked your soul with the majestic beauty of the ocean? Well, now they’ve teamed up with Airbnb so you can spend three days and two nights on the Alucia — the research vessel featured in the series — and even go down in one of the submersibles.

“You’ll dive deep beneath the waves aboard one of the two submersibles on the ship, the TRITON 3300/3 or the Deep Rover, crafts well equipped for marine science research, shipwreck reconnaissance, and undersea videography,” reads the AirBnb description.  Read more…

10 of the most incredible moments from ‘Blue Planet II’

TwitterFacebook

Forgive us David Attenborough, for we are not worthy.

Last Sunday was the last episode of Blue Planet II, and we mourn the loss of a series so astronomically awesome. So let’s take a moment to appreciate the incredible work done by the Blue Planet II team — work which took four years — to bring the wonder of nature closer than we would have thought possible.

1. Fish taking birds out of mid-air

Footage of giant trevally fish leaping out of the water to nom on young arctic terns was the first collective chill Blue Planet II sent down the nation’s spines. Read more…

The finale of ‘Blue Planet II’ carried a message that should be heard by all

In Blue Planet II we have already seen many examples of the effect humanity has had on the world’s oceans, but the finale laid out in plain terms just how much we have changed the seas — and how reversible the changes may be.

There’s no doubt that Sunday’s episode of Blue Planet II (entitled “Our Blue Planet”) left many with profound feelings of species guilt.

Last #BluePlanet2 and it’s the one where David tells us how disappointed he is with us. Feeling sad.

And the prize for the sneakiest thing in the sea goes to…

Attenborough documentaries aren’t just glorious examples of television, they’re useful for scientists in that they document some of the most difficult behaviours to observe in the wild.

Last night Blue Planet II outdid itself, getting footage of an octopus outsmarting the aptly-named pyjama shark.

The octopus in question lived off the coast of South Africa in a kelp forest. She’s quite a good little hunter.

This may be the most heartbreaking ‘Blue Planet II’ moment so far

Humans may be a blight on the planet, but we make a damn good nature documentary.

On Sunday night Blue Planet II went into the open ocean, and revealed the devastating effects that plastic has had on our seas.

Every year we dump 8 million tonnes of plastic into our oceans.
