‘Blockers’ is the girl-friendly, sex-positive raunchfest we didn’t know we needed

It’d be incorrect to say there’s never been a movie like Blockers before. It’s a teen sex comedy in the vein of American Pie or Superbad, with a similar focus on teens trying to get laid on prom night.

But it’s certainly true that the specifics of Blockers make it a rarity.

For starters, the horny high schoolers in questions are girls, not boys. The story belongs just as much to their parents, who are desperate to stop them. And the filmmaker at the helm is a woman – Pitch Perfect writer Kay Cannon, making her directorial debut.

“I really wanted to tell the story from a female perspective,” she told Mashable over the phone. “I felt like it hadn’t been told before.” Read more…

Allow John Cena to explain that butt-chugging scene in ‘Blockers’

In the movie Blockers, John Cena plays an over-protective father whose daughter is heading off to prom with a boy who has a top bun — so he does everything he can, including butt-chugging a 40, to stop her from making any potential “mistakes.”

Ahead of the release of Blockers on April 6, Mashable spoke with Cena to get his own thoughts on prom, nude scenes, and butt-chugging — yes, butt-chugging.

But along the way, the parents (sort-of) learn to let go and trust their kids in a sex-positive way. Read more…

The central premise of Blockers sounds old-fashioned, even retrograde: Three parents learn that their teenage daughters are planning to lose their virginities on prom night, and set out on a madcap adventure to stop them by any means necessary.

What Blockers actually turns out to be, however, is a thoughtful and generous exploration of what sex means to young women and their parents – one that still has plenty of time for uproarious gags about butt-chugging and Fast and the Furious-style car chases.

Blockers wants you to like its adult leads, which is easy enough when they’re portrayed by the instantly winning trio of Leslie Mann, John Cena, and Ike Barinholtz. But it doesn’t necessarily want you to root for them. Other characters are constantly and reasonably pointing out that our adult leads are in the wrong, and we’re left hoping they’ll come around and see the light. Read more…
