Eighth graders can finally see ‘Eighth Grade’ with rating-free screenings

TwitterFacebook

A24 will screen Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade free of charge across the U.S. on August 8 – and free of its constrictive R rating.

Until now, actual eighth graders couldn’t see the searingly raw and empathetic film about adolescence, but Wednesday’s screenings will make it accessible in all 50 states.

Eighth Grade‘s R rating won’t have jumped out at older moviegoers who don’t have to worry about that sort of thing, but it points to bigger problems with the Motion Picture Association of America and its archaic and often arbitrary rating systemEighth Grade earns its R because of a few errant f-bombs; sorry to say, MPAA, but that’s no more than most teens are used to hearing daily. ‘God of War’ has an incredible story. Here are some tips to help you fully enjoy it.

God of War sure has grown up.
The days of gratuitous sex and violence are over. Kratos is older and wiser, and he’s got a second shot at being a family man. When you add all of that together and see how the full story plays out, it’s clear: God of Wa…

‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 struggles with depicting trauma

TwitterFacebook

The good news is that Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 eventually does start to recapture some of the  poignancy that made Season 1 an unprecedented phenomenon.

The bad news is that it takes about half of the season to start getting there.

To be fair, the near-flawless Emmy and Golden Globe-award winning Season 1 casts a very long shadow. The problem with creating a series that fundamentally changes what we think is possible for a popular TV show (streaming or otherwise) is that you then have to follow it up with a Season 2. And now, audience expectation is at an impossibly high bar.

A ‘Leftovers’ star plays a key villain in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

TwitterFacebook

Carrie Coon is Proxima Midnight, one of four members of Thanos’s villainous Black Order.

The Leftovers star obviously isn’t just now joining Avengers: Infinity War — a movie that is shot, almost certainly in the can, and speeding toward its April 27 release. But it’s news to us.

Confirmation comes from no less a reliable source than the sibling filmmakers behind Infinity War. Anthony and Joe Russo revealed Coon’s involvement and role during a recent interview with Radio Times.

You can get a glimpse of Proxima Midnight in this July 2017 tweet from Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito, in which he referred to the Black Order as the “Children of Thanos.” She’s the second one from the left. Read more…

So, who’s going to die in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?

TwitterFacebook

Yeah, yeah, we know: Anyone can die in Avengers: Infinity War

The Marvel marketing machine has been in overdrive promising death and destruction to fans of the franchise, with screenwriter Stephen McFeely promising, “It’s safe to say we will say farewell to people.”

But let’s be real. We all know some of these heroes are safer than others. Some of these heroes have run their course, and are played by actors who seem ready to get off the MCU train. Others are just getting started, and already have sequels on the calendar.

It’s worth keeping in mind, too, that “death” in comic book movies doesn’t mean the same thing it does in real life. Characters die and come back all the time; see Bucky or Loki or Nick Fury. And also that there’s another part to this story we won’t see ’til next year, when Avengers 4 shows up to finish what Infinity War started. Read more…

‘Westworld’ mobile game already available in Australia

TwitterFacebook

As the Westworld Season 2 premiere charges down the railroad tracks, the show’s new mobile game has landed on Android and iOS — in some countries, at least, including Australia.

The game is a little Fallout Shelter, a little Westworld.
