When it comes to nature documentaries, it tends to be the individual stories that we remember best. It happened again and again in Planet Earth II and Blue Planet II — an event in the life of one specific creature, combined with the sweetly soothing sound of David Attenborough’s narration, took the internet by storm.

Last Sunday was the last episode of Blue Planet II, and we mourn the loss of a series so astronomically awesome. So let’s take a moment to appreciate the incredible work done by the Blue Planet II team — work which took four years — to bring the wonder of nature closer than we would have thought possible.

In Blue Planet II we have already seen many examples of the effect humanity has had on the world’s oceans, but the finale laid out in plain terms just how much we have changed the seas — and how reversible the changes may be.

There’s no doubt that Sunday’s episode of Blue Planet II (entitled “Our Blue Planet”) left many with profound feelings of species guilt.
