5 ways to keep plastic out of the world’s oceans

TwitterFacebook

Plastic is kind of like a Twitter reply guy: It never goes away. And there’s more coming in.

Each year, 8 million metric tons of plastic go into the ocean (that’s equal to about one garbage truck per minute), according to a 2016 report by the World Economic Forum, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, and McKinsey & Company.

“Plastic is a substance that once created essentially exists almost in perpetuity and just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces in the environment,” says Graham Forbes, the global plastics project leader at Greenpeace, an international environmental organization.

It’s vital to pay attention to the plight of plastic and implement small changes in your daily life to keep plastic out of the world’s oceansWorld Water Day may be Friday, but we should be working to minimize the harm of plastics every day.  Read more…

There’s now a place for shaming companies that use egregious packaging

TwitterFacebook

Excessive packaging is a massive contributor to global waste — and if governments won’t call manufacturers on it, we’re going to have to resort to nerds on Reddit.

Sigh.

Recently launched subreddit r/EgregiousPackaging captures some of the most excessive offenders in the biz. Contributors share photos of the packages they’ve received, often drowning in paper or plastic.

Look at this shit.

I live in New York City and I never understood why grocery stories insist on wrapping a single rancid pea in plastic wrap and styrofoam. Why must my 5-month-old snow peas be drowned in BPA? Read more…

McDonald’s is ditching plastic straws in Australia too

TwitterFacebook

Australians, you’ll be sipping your thickshake through a paper straw at McDonald’s pretty soon — plastic straws are out.

One week after Starbucks announced it would phase out plastic straws by 2020, McDonald’s has unveiled similar plans to phase them out in Australia by the same year.

The fast good giant will roll out the ban to its 970 restaurants around the country over the next four years, and the first trials will begin in August 2018.

The full global switch to paper straws will only be taking place in Australia, the UK and Ireland for now, but McDonald’s confirmed testing of alternatives has already begun in Belgium, and will begin later this year in the US, France, Sweden and Norway. Read more…

McDonald’s is ditching plastic straws in the UK and Ireland

TwitterFacebook

The days of sipping your milkshake through a plastic straw at McDonald’s are almost over — at least in the UK and Ireland.

The fast food giant announced on Thursday that they’ll be making the switch to paper straws in September this year.

The decision comes in the wake of the UK government announcing plans to ban the sale of plastic straws, and other single-use plastic items, as part of an effort to reduce waste and help the environment.

“Reflecting the broader public debate, our customers told us they wanted to see a move on straws but to do so without compromising their overall experience when visiting our restaurants,” said McDonald’s UK and Ireland CEO Paul Pomroy. “Over the past few months we’ve been working closely with supplier partners to find a solution that works both for our customers, and that the supply is there given the size of our business.
