‘Castle Rock’ revealed who The Kid is and it’s completely nuts

TwitterFacebook

Henry Deaver and The Kid are a pair of mismatched men whose mysteries form the center of Castle Rock. “What happened to Henry when he was a child?” and “Who is The Kid?” are the two questions around which every other mystery — Ruth’s time-traveling dementia, Molly’s Shining powers, why the town seems to suck so much — revolves.

With “Henry Deaver,” the show’s penultimate episode, both of those questions were answered in a twist that some may have seen coming but is still the show’s most disturbing development.

‘Castle Rock’ went full Stephen King with one great ‘The Shining’ reference

TwitterFacebook

Stephen King has written an absolute eff-ton of books, novellas, and short stories in his time, but his most famous is likely The Shining. It’s a dark, sad tale of alcoholism, telepathy, and the danger of topiary sculptures best immortalized in the Stanley Kubrick film that cast Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance, the anger-challenged author who attempted to murder his wife and child while under the influence of the haunted Overlook Hotel.

Since Castle Rock takes place in the same universe as many (and perhaps all) of King’s stories, it was a given that the show would connect somehow to The Shining, but until Episode 8 the only reference was the name and character of Diane “Jackie” Torrance — canonically Jack Torrance’s niece who renamed herself after her uncle to piss off her parent — the town’s resident crime enthusiast who longs for the weird old days when interesting (read: deadly) things happened in her hometown. So ‘Castle Rock’ is apparently a sci-fi drama about a universe that loves to scream, or something

Spoilers up to Castle Rock Season 1, episode 6 below.

Castle Rock is, as many have noted, a very slow burn of a show. It lobs mysteries wholesale at the audiences and jealousy hoards their answers, doling out only the smallest, barely noticeable cl…

On ‘Castle Rock,’ The Kid is not all right

TwitterFacebook

It’s unclear whether or not Castle Rock wants its audience to have sympathy for the devil. Rather, sympathy for emphatically Not The Devil, as its resident harbinger of doom clarified in its latest episode “Harvest” in a showdown at gunpoint with ex-sheriff Alan Pangborn.

Though Bill Skarsgård’s still-nameless character claims to not be Satan himself, the question of what exactly he is remains one of the central questions of Castle Rock

“Harvest” does a good job in causing whiplash around The Kid and his actions, involuntarily or otherwise. One moment he was out of prison, blinking in the sunlight like a mole person emerging from the tunnels of Shawshank, the next he was…maybe psychically predisposing a happy family to murder each other on their child’s birthday. Then he got his whole butt out in a warehouse, hotboxed a car with Jackie Levy, and almost threw himself off a building. Read more…

‘Castle Rock’ blows its mysteries to hell in its best episode so far

TwitterFacebook

The first three episodes of Hulu’s Castle Rock, a one-show example of what a Stephen King Extended Universe looks like on screen, did an admirable job of introducing its audience to the characters, setting, and overall spooky vibe of the eponymous and doomed Maine town.

While there was plenty of mystery to go around — who (or what) is that man in the cage? What happened to Henry when he was 11? Why is this town so overwhelmingly shitty? — the show didn’t coalesce into a unified sense of horror until “The Box,” the literally explosive fourth episode of the series.

Bill Skarsgård looks like hot Satan on ‘Castle Rock’

TwitterFacebook

When Bill Skarsgård was cast in Hulu’s Castle Rock, the joke was that he was going to play evil again. It was an obvious connection, considering that Castle Rock is a Stephen King adaptation like 2017’s It, where Skarsgård played Pennywise/It, a child-munching entity in the shape of a dancing clown.

“At least in this one,” went the thought, “he won’t have to wear all that clown makeup,” like being able to see his face would make his inevitably evil character less frightening. At least in this one he gets to be, you know, hot.

Having seen the first few episodes of Castle Rock, to this I say: yes, Bill Skarsgård is hot, and no, it doesn’t make him any less scary. It makes him more scary. And it’s not his fault.   Read more…

Hulu’s Stephen King series ‘Castle Rock’ gets a spooky new trailer and premiere date

TwitterFacebook

It definitely bodes well for a spooky, new web series when the unmistakable voice of Lost‘s Terry O’Quinn (John Locke, people!) is there to calmly tell you what’s coming.

Castle Rock is hard to pin down, and this trailer doesn’t clear up any questions. It’s a Bad Robot production — that’s J.J. Abrams’ company — and it’s set in a universe populated by Stephen King characters.

It’s both based on King’s books — many of which use the fictional Maine town of Castle Rock as their setting — and set in a story/world that is unto itself. Familiar characters and locations appear, but this is no adaptation. Read more…
