Marijuana tech is being shunned at CES 2019

This post is part of our High-tech High series, which explores weed innovations, and our cultural relationship with cannabis, as legalization in several U.S. states, Canada, and Uruguay moves the market further out of the shadows.

It’s not easy being green — especially at CES, the world’s largest consumer electronics convention. Marijuana tech companies are grumbling about how difficult it is to participate in CES 2019 because organizers will not allow them to exhibit.

“We’re not allowed on the showroom floor, and it’s apparently because [organizers] say they haven’t created a category for cannabis vaporizers yet,” says Jeff Brown, vice president of public policy and communications at PAX Labs, an electronic vaporizer company.  Read more…

Don’t expect a new Nvidia Shield Tablet anytime soon

The Shield TV, Nvidia’s Android TV streaming box, is still getting regular updates, but the Shield Tablet, which launched in 2014, was last refreshed in 2015 and officially discontinued last year, wasn’t quite the same success. As Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said during a small press gathering at CES in Las Vegas today, the company […]

Twitter will broadcast NBA games with a camera focused on a single player

TwitterFacebook

Twitter is preparing to run a new experiment with the National Basketball Association, and it could impact the way some of the biggest basketball fans watch games in the future.

The social media company announced at CES 2019 that it will begin streaming parts of NBA games this year — but with a strange twist.

Twitter will broadcast only the second half of select games, beginning next month with the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, Feb. 17.

The NBA will let fans vote on the @NBAonTNT Twitter account for who they want a camera to focus on during the second half of the game.  Read more…

LG’s extravagant ‘Massive Curve of Nature’ is the most mesmerizing thing at CES 2019

TwitterFacebook

LG has a long tradition of creating mesmerizing displays with its curved OLED TVsCES 2019 was no exception.

Last year, CES attendees were treated to the spectacular OLED Canyon and the year before it stunned with the OLED Tunnel. We had a hunch LG would return to CES with something even wilder, but we didn’t expect a waterfall composed of OLED 4K TVs.

You can hate on CES all you want — it’s too crowded, everyone’s coughing on each other, the food sucks, etc. — but it’s impossible to not be swept away by LG’s “Massive Curve of Nature” display at its booth entrance.

The best tech of CES 2019

New year. New tech!

Like every January, Mashable’s Tech Team came to Las Vegas for CES to preview what’s coming in the world of consumer tech, and boy were there are lot of shiny new gadgets to see.

8K TVs dominated the Las Vegas Convention Center show floor, laptops got interesting again (remember how they were supposed go extinct a few years ago?), and VR saw a much-needed revival.

So much of what’s shown at CES is often conceptual and might never see commercial release. But that’s OK, because that’s what pushes innovations forward. We need crazy dreamers with wild, forward-looking ideas. Without them, tech would be pretty darn boring every year. Read more…

Misty’s adorable robotics platform ships in April for $2,399

The road to consumer robots is littered with the remains of failed startups. Jibo and Kuri mark two recent examples of just how hard it is bringing such a device to market. In fact, with the exception of the single-minded Roomba line, you’d be hard-pressed to name a product that has truly hit mainstream acceptance. […]

LAS VEGAS—If you have $5,000 you can own a supercharged Windows 10 workstation.

The Cemtrex SmartDesk contains three touch-screen monitors, sensors that can let you control your PC with hand gestures, and a wireless phone charger that sits on the side.

We saw the workstation here at CES. It comes integrated with a keyboard, trackpad, document scanner, speakerS, and a web camera, all in a polished frame that’s accessible whether you’re sitting or standing.

US-based Cemtrex says the 120-pound desk is the most advanced workstation on the market. However, the PC running inside isn’t anything to brag about it. According to the spec sheet, the system uses an 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor, with either a GTX 1050 graphics card or GTX 1060, and 16GB or 32GB of RAM. In other words, nothing really overpowered. Read more…
