Google Maps adds yet another feature: Google Assistant

TwitterFacebook

Google Assistant is coming to Google Maps.

Yep, after adding music streaming, restaurant planning, e-scooter renting, and more to its mobile maps app, Google announced Tuesday at CES in Las Vegas that its digital assistant is joining the party.

Google Assistant is expected to be on 1 billion devices by the end of January. Amazon’s Alexa, meanwhile, is reportedly on more than 100 million devices.

So, why add the voice-controlled assistant to Google Maps? Well, Google envisions users asking it for directions home, or to nearby restaurants and saved locations. You can ask the assistant to search for places along your route (like gas stations) or add a stop — all things that used to require some button pushing. Read more…

Dell finally fixes the single worst thing about the XPS 13

TwitterFacebook

Dell’s XPS 13 laptop is beloved by PC users, and for good reason: It’s really thin, really light, and the super thin bezels surrounding the display make MacBooks look ancient by comparison.

But the laptop’s worst feature is easily the placement of the webcam on the bezel below the screen. It’s in a weird spot, right where the camera is always aimed at an unflattering angle, right up your nose.

Now, thankfully, Dell has listened to the complaints and put the camera back where it belongs — above the screen — on the new 2019 XPS 13.

The new Windows 10 laptop made its debut at CES 2019, and it’ll likely be a top contender for best laptop of the new year. Read more…

CES revokes award from female-founded sex tech company

Sex tech has been done at the Consumer Electronics Show before. This year, however, seems to be different, with the organization behind CES, the Consumer Technology Association, revoking an innovation award from a company geared toward women’s sexual health. The CTA revoked an innovation award from Lora DiCarlo, the company behind a hands-free device that […]

TwitterFacebook

CES 2019 is officially upon us. Which means … giant televisions. Autonomous vehicles. Cute robots. Even Apple has a rare presence this year.

If you weren’t able to make it to Vegas for the first big tech event of 2019, don’t worry. Read on for the highlights from the first official day of CES

Apple comes to CES … sort of

CES is usually a hard pass for Apple. Tim Cook and company generally opt to make their announcements at the tech giant’s own Apple events.

That’s not totally the case this year.

There’s a new Impossible Burger, and this time it’s gluten-free

TwitterFacebook

Impossible Foods is throwing a new party in your mouth, and this time everyone really is invited.

The company debuted a new version of its eponymous burger on Monday, and you can credibly call it an upgrade. In addition to having significantly less fat than beef burgers and zero cholesterol, the new plant-based patty is gluten-free, fixing a big criticism of the current (and increasingly popular) Impossible Burger. It’s also suited for all kinds of ground-meat dishes, from meatballs to sloppy joes, not just hamburgers, the company says.

Harley-Davidson just made its first electric motorcycle available for pre-order

TwitterFacebook

It’s a hog on a diet.

Harley-Davidson announced Monday at CES that its all-electric motorcycle, the LiveWire, is now officially available for pre-order. It starts at $29,799 and will begin shipping in August.

The iconic motorcycle company first introduced the LiveWire in 2014, but it had been more of a flashy concept than a reality until last year. In 2015, it appeared on screen as the steed of Scarlett Johansson’s Avengers character Black Widow. And, finally, in the company’s January 2018 earnings call, it confirmed that the bike would ship in the next 18 months — which now appears to be right on schedule. Read more…

Daimler’s semi-autonomous truck puts self-driving features on the road

TwitterFacebook

Daimler trucks are going autonomous — eventually.

For now, Level 2 (L2) partial automation will have to suffice. The vehicle company behind Mercedes-Benz cars announced Monday at CES 2019 that its new Freightliner Cascadia big-rig will include higher levels of robotic driving. The semi-autonomous trucks will start production in July in North America. It’s not fully self-driving, but it’s pushing the trucking industry deeper into an autonomous mode.

Truck CEO Martin Daum admitted he was skeptical of autonomous capabilities back in 2015, when Daimler unveiled its Freightliner Inspiration autonomous concept truck. Now he sees Level 4 autonomy (full autonomy in most situations, climates, and environments) coming to trucks within the decade. Read more…
