‘Life-Size 2’ is a made-for-TV Christmas movie with a (gasp!) bisexual character

TwitterFacebook

For years, queer representation has been sorely lacking in the most venerate genres: made-for-TV Christmas movies.

I personally can’t say I ever cared, but for those who do: Congratulations! 2018 has brought you a Christmas miracle in the form of Life-Size 2, a new straight-to-Hulu Christmas movie featuring a bisexual character and Tyra Banks.

It’s a gay double whammy. Minor cultural achievement unlocked!

Made-for-TV Christmas movies are a fairly conservative genre, so seeing any queer representation — and representation of queer women of color — is mind-blowing. I’m sure some closeted kid out there who loves subscription-based streaming services and made-for-TV Christmas movies will be thrilled to see themselves represented in this unapologetically corny 81 minute film. The best gifts for all you holiday-movie-obsessed filthy animals

TwitterFacebook

Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.

It’s that time of year again. You’re permitted to huddle up on the couch — roast beast from Whoville in one hand, a moose-shaped mug of eggnog in the other — and watch a whole bunch of movies you saw at this exact time last year.

From The Santa Clause to Home Alone and The Grinch to Jingle All the Way, these movies are the ones you know back to front. You probably routinely quote them out loud, to the detriment of your relationships.

And if it’s not you annually weeping through Love Actually and The Holiday, or demanding someone listen to your pitch on Die Hard as the ultimate holiday movie, that person is definitely someone you know. Read more…

Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding are doing a Wham! inspired Christmas movie together

TwitterFacebook

Emilia Clarke is ready to embark on a new epic story centred around the destructive forces of fire and ice — and Christmas.

The Game of Thrones star is going to be acting along side Henry Golding of Crazy Rich Asians in the upcoming Paul Feig movie Last Christmas. And yes, the movie is actually inspired by the 1984 Wham! song.

Our guess is that Clarke is the soul of ice that starts a fire in the heart of Golding, a man under cover.

The casting was confirmed by Golding on Twitter, and he seems just as excited as we are.

Finally I can start getting excited and share the news..@paulfeig and I will be back to business in London at the end of the year ❤️ https://t.co/pLI5S5S0zq

Here’s which Netflix original Christmas movie you should watch

Christmas Inheritance is a cheesy monstrosity, and I’ll probably watch it at least two more times before the end of the year.

Let’s back up: It’s been, to put it mildly, a rough year.

So it’s no surprise that your timeline may be — even moreso than usual — decked out with people happily freaking out about cheesy Hallmark Christmas movies, something nice to relax to for a moment as the world burns. (Vox has a good breakdown on the growing cult of Hallmark.)

Anyway, this year Netflix decided to get in on the fun as well and released two of their own in the style of Hallmark*: A Christmas Prince, which you’ve probably heard about because Netflix burned their own users for watching it, and Christmas Inheritance, which dropped this past weekend.  Read more…

Netflix pulls some Big Brother nonsense with your data

TwitterFacebook

Netflix watches you, too.

The streaming service sent what it probably thought was an innocuous-enough tweet Saturday night, ribbing a few dozen of its users for partaking in a holiday-inspired B-movie binge.

To the 53 people who’ve watched A Christmas Prince every day for the past 18 days: Who hurt you?

— Netflix US (@netflix) December 11, 2017

We reached out to a Netflix rep, who confirmed the tweet is accurate: 53 people have watched A Christmas Prince every day for 18 days. Imagine being one of them right now.

This is nakedly dystopic messaging from a secretive internet video company that collects reams of data from 109 million subscribers — and rarely gives us a peek behind its curtain. I mean, jeez, Netflix is offering tinsel-dusted gruel on its platform and mocking people who consume said gruel every single day (for 18 days). As if there’s a “correct” way to watch a mildly uplifting Christmas movie in an era when death by nuclear hellfire seems more assured with each passing second. Read more…
