Tobacco company makes a hard pivot to cryptocurrency mining

TwitterFacebook

Rich Cigars just made the ultimate pivot: from high-end cigars and tobacco products to cryptocurrency.

The Miami-based company announced Thursday it had become Intercontinental Technology, Inc., and was phasing out the cigar part of the business — aka its entire premise.

Instead the company is jumping into two very not tobacco-related industries: patents and “aggressive cryptocurrency mining.” And it initially seems to be paying off.

With Bitcoin, Ethereum, LiteCoin and other cryptocurrencies rallying like crazy in the past few days this seems like a smart move. Who needs a fancy cigar when there’s Bitcoin to be mined at nearly $17,000 per coin? Read more…

Target plans to step up its delivery game in a big way come 2018.

The retailer announced the $550 million acquisition of Shipt on Wednesday, adding a company that specializes specifically in same-day delivery to its asset portfolio. In the same announcement, Target also confirmed plans to — wait for it — offer same-day delivery to its customers.

The company’s announcement lays out a plan to offer speedier deliveries at “about half” of its stores in early 2018. The program is then expected to expand by the 2018 holiday to include most Target stores, in all major markets. Read more…

Comcast designed a Wi-Fi router that you won’t be ashamed to show off

TwitterFacebook

Hear the words “Wi-Fi router,” and you usually think of that vertical slab decorated with ports and blinking lights, or a horizontal slab sprouting multiple antennas that resembles some kind monstrous alien bug.

In short, Wi-Fi routers are uglyComcast is looking to change that with its xFi Advanced Gateway, which trades the slabs for a sleek, slanted mini tower. Apple’s latest iOS update fixes a bizarre issue that started right after midnight on Dec. 2

TwitterFacebook

This is an odd one: Not long after midnight on Dec. 2, some iOS 11-powered iPhones started crashing.

It was an issue with local notifications, as software engineer Yoshimasa Niwa noted on Twitter (h/t iMore). And it’s already been addressed by Apple, which — in an unusual twist — pushed out iOS 11.2 to all users just a handful of hours after the final developer beta version of the update went live.

Most iOS updates arrive on Tuesdays, but the time-related crashes obviously led Apple to pull the trigger early.

If you have an app that has local notification with repeating settings, it will crash iOS Springboard on Dec. 2 (Tomorrow!) Here is a reproducible app by @takayamahttps://t.co/ecEoxFN2hM

Inside the Amazon Black Friday pop-up that isn’t a shop

TwitterFacebook

Today is Black Friday. Until very recently in Britain that didn’t mean anything at all. We only knew about it as a violent, orgiastic display of capitalism from across the pond in which shoppers literally fought over getting a good deal on a microwave. Well, like it or not, it’s landed.

And bringing Black Friday in a way they hope will negate the images of angry shoppers stampeding each other to death is Amazon. As a delivery service they realise that their platform allows people to escape the kind of Black Friday bedlam we’re familiar with, but this comes with a drawback — you can’t try out the thing you want to purchase because it’s not physically there.
