Cable’s Netflix bundling deals aren’t stopping customers from cutting the cord

They’ve tried to play nice. They’ve tried to play hardball. But nothing the cable companies do is stopping the affliction terrorizing the TV industry.

The cord cutters are here — and they’re spreading.

Cable providers have been wringing their hands and pulling out deal after deal to try to keep cable TV subscribersMost recently, they started bundling Netflix subscriptions with cable packages (because bundling is totally something customers don’t hate at all). 

But a new report from eMarketer shows that their tactics aren’t panning out. Not only is the rate of TV watchers opting for Over The Top (OTT) service on the rise — where they just watch internet TV providers like Netflix, instead of paying for cable — it’s also accelerating faster than projected growth rates. On Twitter, they are openly bartered, donated, even celebrated.

“Anyone have a Spectrum user ID & password I can trade for?” one Twitter user wrotelast month. Another thanked her friend “for giving me his Spectrum username and password to watch the World Series Game 7.” A third tweeted: “Totally figured out my parents Spectrum password and can watch cable now through my Apple TV. I literally love my life.”

Tom Rutledge has had enough. The chief executive officer of Charter Communications Inc., which sells cable TV under the Spectrum name, is leading an industrywide effort to crack down on password sharing. T-Mobile is launching a TV service because there’s just not enough options just yet

If you’re a cord cutter and you really, somehow don’t think there’s enough options for streaming TV over the internet, we have some good news. 

T-Mobile is launching a television service and acquiring Layer3 TV to do so. 

Details are scarce right now, but the move highlights how every single service provider is moving to also be the company that you go to for your TV content. 

T-Mobile did not announce a price or details about what the service would entail, but it did note in a press release that: “With Layer3 TV’s leading technology and talented team, T-Mobile plans to launch its own disruptive new TV service next year, tapping into the amazing content available from creators today to disrupt legacy cable and satellite TV’s distribution model.” Read more…

Big cable bundles require people who don’t want to watch sports to shell out big bucks for channels they never watch.

That’s always been one of the big critiques of cable bundles. Non-sports fans basically subsidize the cost of sports packages. 

Not anymore. On Tuesday, Philo launched its much-anticipated non-sports TV package, offering classic linear television over the internet with a select group of channels. 

The lineup includes some of the major cable channels including AMC, A&E, HGTV, Lifetime, MTV, Comedy Central, and many more—35 in all. And nope, no ESPN. Read more…
