Original Content podcast: ‘Dear White People’ returns to ask more uncomfortable questions

Dear White People has a pretty provocative title — and the show, for the most part, lives up to that promise, with a sharply drawn portrait of racial tension at Winchester University, a fictional Ivy League school. This is the episode of ‘Dear White People’ every ally needs to see

Netflix’s comedy Dear White People pushes the envelope in many ways, and Season 2 gave us a half hour of pure catharsis as Sam (Logan Browning) and Gabe (John Patrick Amedori) fought through their feelings in the recording studio.

The bottle episode – featuring several long takes, heated arguments, and a heartbreaking conclusion – gets Browning and Amedori on their feet, exploring their characters’ relationship through physicality and movement as much as Justin Simien and Jack Moore’s scorching words. This is a conversation that starts with “Are you aware of your white savior complex?”

And then it only escalates. Read more…

‘Dear White People’ Season 2 is empowering and brilliant

“This country is a mindfuck,” one character says early in Dear White People Season 2.

In its first 30 minutes alone, Dear White People Vol. II makes good on that highly relatable statement, with Sam (Logan Browning) arguing with the internet and trying to convince people out of their point of view before realizing that that almost never works.

Season 1 was written as President Obama’s second term drew to a close, when racism was supposed to be over, before there was any concept – or indeed, any real fear – of Trump’s America.

Season 2 was created in another era, with new responsibility. The country may be divided during Season 2, but Winchester’s historically black dorm has just been integrated. This only deepens the campus community’s fragile fissures, with an emerging culture of alt-right provocation seeping onto the Winchester University campus. Read more…

Tensions are rising in ‘Dear White People’ Volume 2 trailer

TwitterFacebook

“Is this a movement or a primal scream?” one character asks another in the trailer for Dear White People Vol. 2, between shots of a college campus taut with racial tension.

“Both,” she replies.

In the full trailer for Dear White People‘s second season, Winchester University is still dealing with the fallout from Season 1’s blackface party, student protests, and that time a student almost got shot. Sam (Logan Browning) is getting anonymous hate both online (which she can’t resist responding to) and in the form of vandalized bananas hanging outside her dorm room (not in an empowering way). She’s fired up and doesn’t care who knows it – but isn’t that who Sam is? Read more…

‘Dear White People’ Season 2 will be full of buzzwords

If you missed out on Netflix’s fantastic 2017 series Dear White People, the Season 2 teaser tells you exactly what’s up. This show deals with cultural appropriation, sex and gender norms, mild adult themes, and more (such as “Oppression ft. Migos,” a new Katy Perry single).

Season 2 shows Sam (Logan Browning) back on the radio, likely dismantling cultural perceptions on a regular basis as her haters’ vitriol bubbles up. The teaser also includes appearances from Lena Waithe and Todrick Hall among the ensemble cast – Browning, Brandon Bell, DeRon Howard, Antoinette Robertson, Marquee Richardson, and more.  Read more…
