What happens when an animal influencer dies?

TwitterFacebook

It’s Viral Market Crash week on Mashable. Join us as we take stock of the viral economy and investigate how the internet morphed from a fun free-for-all to a bleak hellscape we just can’t quit.

Four and a half years ago, Chloe Kardoggian was looking for a new home. She wasn’t what many would consider to be the most adoptable dog — at nine year old, she had heart problems, bug eyes, and only two teeth to her name. But Dorie Herman saw past all that.

Herman says she adopted Chloe from “a friend of a friend of a friend” after seeing a Facebook post announcing Chloe was up for adoption. She started an Instagram account for her new pet as a way to show Chloe’s old owners how she was doing.  Read more…

‘Dead’ woman wakes up in a morgue. Why does this keep happening?

TwitterFacebook

A woman was taken to the morgue and pronounced dead after a car crash near Johannesburg in South Africa.

The only problem? She wasn’t dead.

According to the BBC, the unnamed woman woke up in a mortuary fridge after a car pile-up on June 24 which reportedly left two others dead.

The woman was discovered by a morgue worker, according to the news service, and she is now recovering in a hospital east of Johannesburg.

The woman’s family declined to comment on the incident to the BBC, but said, “We need answers.”

So, how did this happen? An investigation is reportedly underway. Ambulance company Distress Alert, who mispronounced the woman dead, told news publisher Times Live, “Equipment used to determine life showed no form of life on the woman.” Read more…

The death count for Hurricane Maria, currently at 64, may be off by thousands

TwitterFacebook

The Puerto Rican government has a list of 64 dead from Hurricane Maria, the tropical cyclone that hit the island in September 2017.

This number, however, is “highly uncertain” notes the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). A new study published Tuesday in The New England Journal of Medicine puts that number at an estimated 4,645 — 70 times higher than the official estimate.

“Our results indicate that the official death count of 64 is a substantial underestimate of the true burden of mortality after Hurricane Maria,” write the authors, led by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Read more…
