Google gives its AI the reins over its data center cooling systems

The inside of data centers is loud and hot — and keeping servers from overheating is a major factor in the cost of running them. It’s no surprise then that the big players in this space, including Facebook, Microsoft and Google, all look for different ways of saving cooling costs. Facebook uses cool outside air when […]

This 3D-printed AI construct analyzes by bending light

Machine learning is everywhere these days, but it’s usually more or less invisible: it sits in the background, optimizing audio or picking out faces in images. But this new system is not only visible, but physical: it performs AI-type analysis not by crunching numbers, but by bending light. It’s weird and unique, but counterintuitively, it’s an excellent demonstration of how deceptively simple these “artificial intelligence” systems are.

Fritz wants to help developers bring machine learning to their mobile apps

It’s one thing to run machine learning models in the cloud, where you have plenty of resources. On mobile devices, you’re dealing with very finite compute resources, so if you want to run your models directly on the devices, they have to be highly optimized. Add to that that Apple and Google are taking somewhat […]

Amazon’s DeepLens is one smart camera

TwitterFacebook

Amazon just launched a camera that thinks.

The AWS DeepLens AI Deep Learning Video Camera, also called the DeepLens, was introduced in November during the Amazon Web Services (AWS) re:Invent conference. Now it’s finally available for for $249 after much delay (it was supposed to begin shipping by “early 2018”).

DeepLens is similar to the AI-powered Google Clips camera, but while Clips is targeted at consumers, DeepLens is a new toy for developers.

According to Amazon’s website, it’s the first video camera designed to teach deep learning basics and optimized to run machine learning models on the camera. This kind of machine learning is usually done by gathering information on one device and computing in the cloud — as opposed to doing it all on one gadget. Read more…

Amazon starts shipping its $249 DeepLens AI camera for developers

Back at its re:Invent conference in November, AWS announced its $249 DeepLens, a camera that’s specifically geared toward developers who want to build and prototype vision-centric machine learning models. The company started taking pre-orders for DeepLens a few months ago, but now the camera is actually shipping to developers. Ahead of today’s launch, I had a chance […]

Audit of NHS Trust’s app project with DeepMind raises more questions than it answers

A third party audit of a controversial patient data-sharing arrangement between a London NHS Trust and Google DeepMind appears to have skirted over the core issues that generated the controversy in the first place. The audit (full report here) — conducted by law firm Linklaters — of the Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust’s acute kidney injury detection app […]

Google brings offline neural machine translations for 59 languages to its Translate app

Currently, when the Google Translate apps for iOS and Android has access to the internet, its translations are far superior to those it produces when it’s offline. That’s because the offline translations are phrase-based, meaning they use an older machine translation technique than the machine learning-powered systems in the cloud that the app has access to […]

Forget DeepFakes, Deep Video Portraits are way better (and worse)

The strange, creepy world of “deepfakes,” videos (often explicit) with the faces of the subjects replaced by those of celebrities, set off alarm bells just about everywhere early this year. And in case you thought that sort of thing had gone away because people found it unethical or unconvincing, the practice is back with the highly convincing “Deep Video Portraits,” which refines and improves the technique.

Facebook’s open-source Go bot can now beat professional players

Go is the go-to game for machine learning researchers. It’s what Google’s DeepMind team famously used to show off its algorithms, and Facebook, too, recently announced that it was building a Go bot of its own. As the team announced at the company’s F8 developer conference today, the ELF OpenGo bot has now achieved professional […]

Facebook announces PyTorch 1.0, a more unified AI framework

Though Facebook’s focus on Day 1 of its F8 conference centered on the company’s recent struggles and their relationship with the phrase “taking broader responsibility,” Day 2 shifted most of the pizazz to the technical advances its giant team has made over the past year. Today, the company announced PyTorch 1.0, a new iteration of […]
