Jordan Peele’s ‘Lorena’ docuseries is about way more than a severed penis

It’s never too late to reconsider the facts.

If you’re a true crime fan or were, y’know, alive in 1993, then chances are you’ve heard of Lorena and John Wayne Bobbitt — the infamous couple who took tabloids by storm thanks to a severed penis. 

Executive producer Jordan Peele’s new four-part docuseries, Lorena, asks modern viewers to reevaluate where now Lorena Gallo and her shocking actions on “that night” reside within our collective memory and sympathy. That request is one worth granting.

The 1990s were a dramatic time for headlines, particularly within the crime realm. Nancy Kerrigan’s shattered knee, O.J. Simpson’s infamous white Bronco, and JonBenét Ramsey’s macabre glamor shots plastered tabloid covers for much of the decade and continue to darkly fascinate through modern retellings.  Read more…

Netflix’s ‘Dogs’ is so much more than another funny pet video

Don’t get me wrong: I love a good funny pet compilation. (That’s practically the only thing YouTube’s “play next” algorithm suggests for me anymore.) But, in the best ways imaginable, Netflix’s Dogs is so much more than just another cute clip.

Executive produced by Amy Berg and Glen Zipper, this six-part anthology series documents the lives of numerous furry subjects, as well as those of the people who surround and care for them. 

“What really intrigued us was the opportunity to tell the story of the bond between human beings and dogs,” Zipper said of the project. “When you’re telling the story through that lens, it offers an opportunity to introduce us to so many different types of journeys, so many different types of characters and challenges, all with stakes that ultimately need to be paid off in one way or the other.”  Read more…

Netflix’s corporate greed docuseries ‘Dirty Money’ will tackle Trump

“You need money to take money,” declares the provocative tagline of Netflix’s Dirty Money, an upcoming documentary series about greed and corruption in massive, international companies. From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side), the series goes deep into the dealings of companies like Volkswagon, HSBC, and yes – TRUMP Inc.
