Who is June speaking to in the voiceover for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’?

TwitterFacebook

This article contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2, Episode 11, and speculation about the plot for future seasons.

More than any other episode before it, “Holly” made clear that June’s voiceovers in The Handmaid’s Tale are more than just a powerful storytelling device.

June is telling her story to someone, somewhere, at some time in the future. And that raises a whole mess of questions we might not even have thought to ask before.

Who is the “you” June is telling her story to? How is she even telling her story at all, when she lives in a society that forbids her from either speaking or writing? What does it mean for her survival — and Gilead’s? And what does this tell us about the show’s endgame? Read more…

In the long absence of Game of Thrones, the show that seemingly everyone’s telling you to watch now is The Handmaid’s Tale. And for damn good reason.

Based on the novel of the same name by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale tells of a dystopian future in which women are forced into sexual service in order to populate a society suffering from low fertility rates. Elisabeth Moss stars in the titular role.

‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 struggles with depicting trauma

TwitterFacebook

The good news is that Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 eventually does start to recapture some of the  poignancy that made Season 1 an unprecedented phenomenon.

The bad news is that it takes about half of the season to start getting there.

To be fair, the near-flawless Emmy and Golden Globe-award winning Season 1 casts a very long shadow. The problem with creating a series that fundamentally changes what we think is possible for a popular TV show (streaming or otherwise) is that you then have to follow it up with a Season 2. And now, audience expectation is at an impossibly high bar.

‘Handmaid’s Tale’ trailer reveals chilling new Season 2 footage

TwitterFacebook

The cast and creators of Handmaid’s Tale have been teasing a new tagline for Season 2: “Gilead is within you.” And the new trailer hints at exactly what that disturbing phrase means.

“Is this what freedom looks like?” June/Offred asks, when we pick back up where the Season 1 cliffhanger left off — as she escapes in a truck that looks more like a prison.

June realizes that there is no way out when “Gilead is within you.” In a literal and metaphorical sense, as she carries both the trauma of it with her, and the child born of Gilead’s regime.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 2 trailer wants everybody to look what’s going down

TwitterFacebook

If you thought The Handmaid’s Tale couldn’t possibly get any darker or more disturbing than Season 1, allow the first Season 2 trailer to disabuse you of that notion.

There’s no actual dialogue in the video, just a lot of haunting imagery – of women and men being abused, of the barren Colonies, of a pissed-off June (a.k.a. Offred) looking ready to burn it all down.

All of it is set to a creepy slowed-down of Buffalo Springfield, because apparently not even Gilead is immune to that particular trailer trend.

The Handmaid’s Tale Season 2 premieres April 25. Read more…
