‘Get Out’ inspires a college course taught around the horror film

TwitterFacebook

If you are one of the many folks rightfully upset about Get Out being shut out of the Golden Globes last night, keep reading.

A college course on black horror films, through the lens of 2017’s box office shattering film Get Out, will be kicking off at UCLA this week. However, if you’re not a student there, you can still get in on the same lectures that Jordan Peele himself snuck into last year and learn a whole lot more about the critically acclaimed film and the overlooked genre of black horror.

Not a UCLA student? Take my non-credit, online #blackhorror webinar The Sunken Place w/@StevenBarnes1. Six lectures live or on your own schedule starting 1/13. Send your questions for @JordanPeele! The 10 best films of 2017

TwitterFacebook

We’ll say this for 2017: We were so lousy with great movies this year, it felt impossible to narrow the very best down to a list of ten.

In fact, truth be told, we’re still not sure that these are the ten very best films of the year. We could name another dozen films as worthy as any on this list (hi there, Wonder Woman and Blade Runner 2049), and a dozen more we missed but suspect could be on this list (sorry, Nocturama).

But the calendar year is finite, and so is the window in which it’s socially acceptable to publish “best of the year” lists. So without further ado, here are 10 favorites from 2017. Please don’t yell at us. Read more…

‘Get Out’ is the best rated movie of 2017

TwitterFacebook

The best-rated movie of 2017 was a comedy, horror, or documentary – depending on how you look at it. Jordan Peele’s directorial debut Get Out was the highest rated film of the year on Rotten Tomatoes, with a steadfast 99% from critics and 87% from audiences.

The film released in February, early enough in the calendar year and almost as early as possible in the Oscar year that it could have fallen into obscurity by summer – but it stayed. Many didn’t know what to make of the jarring trailer, but it piqued interest.

When the film released, it was to an unprecedented perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences had sold out theaters to experience it themselves. Read more…

Is ‘Get Out’ a comedy? The Golden Globes think so

TwitterFacebook

Get Out was a lot of things: a tense thriller, a biting social commentary, an incredible directorial debut for Jordan Peele, a breakthrough for lead actor Daniel Kaluuya.

But was it a comedy?

As far as the Golden Globes are concerned, yes. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association determined this week that Get Out will compete in the “musical or comedy” categories for the upcoming awards.

The designation left some people – including one of the film’s stars – scratching their heads.

But if I can be honest this is weird to me… Their is nothing funny about racism… Was it that unrealistic lol https://t.co/5xSXBmatfP
