Amazon is pulling its second HQ out of NYC, and people are delighted

On Thursday, Amazon announced that it will be pulling its planned second headquarters out of New York City.

It was a remarkable about-face for the company, and followed weeks of considerable grassroots opposition on the ground. 

“Like a petulant child, Amazon insists on getting its way or takes its ball and leaves,” New York State Senator Mike Gianaris, who represents the district affected, said of Amazon’s pullout to the New York Times. “The only thing that happened here is that a community that was going to be profoundly affected by their presence started asking questions.” Read more…

Microsoft plans a major overhaul of its Redmond campus

Microsoft is not the only company building a new super-duper campus for its employees. 

Unlike Apple’s recently opened “spaceship” campus, however, Microsoft is merely upgrading its current campus in Redmond, Washington.

According to the company, the “refresh” of its Redmond headquarters will include “18 new buildings, 6.7 million square feet of renovated workspace, $150 million in transportation infrastructure improvements, public spaces, sports fields and green space.”

When it’s all done — in five to seven years — the campus will have enough room for 47,000 Microsoft employees, with the possibility to expand for 8,000 more people.  Read more…
