Nintendo’s Labo is amazing, as long as it doesn’t collect the Wii’s dust

TwitterFacebook

I brought my mom along to check out Nintendo LaboWhat a trip.

She’s never been a fan of video games, and always put harsh restrictions on my access to them as a kid. But she came away from the experience coveting Nintendo’s new cardboard creations and plotting a Switch purchase. A shocking turnaround.

And that got me thinking. It’s 12 years ago, late 2006. My sister and other members of my family — none of them fans of gaming — were jazzed about Nintendo’s Wii. They were lined up on launch day alongside video game geeks like me. Read more…

These speakers stack like legos and communicate ‘like a hive’

TwitterFacebook

Smart speakers are invading our homes — but they don’t all necessarily produce quality sound.

The Swedish audio company Sound Dimension is interested in producing quality audio, although you can’t (yet) ask their speakers what the weather might be like tomorrow, as you can a Google Home Mini or Amazon Echo. These speakers, called Soundots, can be reconfigured into different arrangements like legos, and are now on show at the 2018 CES tech conference. They communicate with each other like “members of a community or hive,” said Sound Dimension CEO Fredrik Gunnarsson.

What happens when governments get into cryptocurrency

TwitterFacebook

Russia is working on a government-run cryptocurrency. And they’re not alone.

Governments around the world — including the U.S., China, Japan, Canada, Venezuela, Estonia, Sweden, and Uruguay — are either actively working on some form of digital currency or exploring the topic.

But don’t expect a bunch of bitcoin clones. Governments have very different priorities, and decentralization — a main feature of most cryptocurrenices including bitcoin — doesn’t tend to be one of them. In fact, government digital currencies could herald a new era of centralization, posing serious questions about privacy and the viability of true cryptocurrencies like bitcoin.  Read more…

The technology upon which bitcoin operates is suddenly the hot new thing. Acolytes believe it will change how we conduct business, elections, and even finding a mate (more on that later). Suddenly, there’s a blockchain startup for just about everything.

As much as we wish we could, we can’t write about them all. But when thinking back on the year, our email inboxes were so often filled with blockchain pitches that the topic itself deserved attention.

In trying to capture this craziness, we have put together some of our favorite blockchain pitches of 2017 in an attempt to provide you with an idea of just how much of a gold rush we’re witnessing. Some of these pitches are pretty good; others are decidedly not good. As you’ll see below, we awarded each of them with a superlative, included the subject line, and abridged versions of the email. Slow your roll, bitcoin.
The finicky cryptocurrency has skyrocketed in overall value throughout 2017, but its bumpy December continued in the run-up to Christmas. After posting an all-time high of $19,796 per bitcoin on Dec. 17, the price fell to $11…
