Never forget: This was the year we fell in love with April the giraffe

Listen, this year was almost entirely awful. But one of the best things — nay, the best thing — that occurred in 2017 was April the giraffe.

Millions tuned in to watch Animal Adventure Park’s giraffe cam and keep up with April’s seemingly endless pregnancy. In fact, her pregnancy was so long that it broke the Internet.

People went a little off the rails. Fans came up with conspiracy theories that the whole thing was just an elaborate April Fools joke, and one YouTuber even made a song about April to pass the time. Read more…

Not done holiday shopping? Time to buy some candles and call it a day.

The holidays are upon us, and we’re willing to bet you’re already burning at both ends.

Perhaps your family is in town, including your shitty nephews. Perhaps you have an elaborate Christmas menu to plan. Perhaps you are hung over from your office holiday party, overtaken by fear that the hangover might last several days.

Who has time for intensive gift-shopping? Not you!

Yes, yes, in a perfect world you’d have bought or knit or woodworked your gifts weeks ago — each of them perfectly suited to the passions of each of your cousins. But if you didn’t, here is what you do: buy each of those humans a scented candle. Read more…

The 10 best TV shows of 2017 (returning)

TwitterFacebook

Apart from a few of the usual slumps, TV was great in 2017 in a year when almost everything else was not. We found solace in comedy, joy in romance, and catharsis in dark dramas. With over 400 original shows out there in the universe, we had to make two best of TV lists – one for shows that debuted in 2017 and another for the ones that kept us coming back. Below, in no particular order, are 10 returning shows we thought were exceptional in 2017.

1Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

Rebecca’s mania escalated in the later part of Season 2, culminating in a chilling finale that made anything and everything possible for Season 3. The show came back grimmer and tougher than ever; in a matter of episodes, Rebecca’s entire past was exposed, her friends betrayed, and her volatile emotional state unimaginably triggered. We move into 2018 with a new diagnosis, renewed friendships, and the knowledge that Josh Chan is irrelevant. Rebecca Bunch, on the other hand, is more important than ever. Read more…

The most insane White House presser moments of 2017

TwitterFacebook

Prior to 2017, my knowledge of White House press briefings came entirely from The West Wing. I thought fictional press secretary CJ Cregg’s collegial relationship with the White House press corps was typical. Oh how wrong I was — at least for the Trump administration.

A hostile relationship between the press and the White House emerged as soon as Sean Spicer took the podium in January 2017 and continued after his July resignation and the appointment of the more restrained Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Throughout the year, the antagonistic briefings have ranged from absurd to infuriating.

Nothing summed up 2017 more than the story of bullied 11-year-old Keaton Jones

On one of the final weekends of 2017, the video of an 11-year-old bullied kid named Keaton Jones spread like wildfire over the internet. Though a simple message made it go viral, its growing and sticky complexity, can’t help but remind us what kind o…
